Just had the Transmission done on my 81 about 3 weeks ago and the total price for the removal , Rebuilding , and Instalation of the transmission was $900. The price of rebuilding was around $600 so that leaves about $300 for the removal and intallation..
It was well worth the price to me as things are a bit tight under there ...And I have a hard time getting under there being a 63 year old Fart..
Hope this helps...

I was quoted $500 (and 2 days duration) to swap out the TH400 to a 200R.

The $250-300 range is fair. Remember they have to "drop" the exhaust system and remove the trans. As a suggestion, I would replace the torque converter with a new one. The one in the car is what 20+ years old? Also, have them check the u-joints since the drive shaft will be out. This way you will not have to revisit these parts. It will add to the bill, but in the long run you will be happier.

Also, have them flush the radiator trans cooling tank and lines. There is ton of old dirt hiding in there.

$250-$300 sounds perfectly in the ballpark for a straight R&R.
