What are the Consequences of This?
When I installed my timing set I thought I had the dots lined up perfectly, cam @ 6, crank @ 12. After I put it all together and went back and looked at the digital pics, it looks like the dots are about 1/2 tooth or 1/16" misaligned. Will this cause big probs at startup?

Re: What are the Consequences of This? (comp)
Post the picture...
It seems like they almost never line up EXACTLY PERFECT. so if the picture looks like an optical illusion, then I wouldn't worry about it.
If it looks like it's really off, then time to open it back up, and fix it.

Re: What are the Consequences of This? (Desertdawg)
Here is the picture I was sent.
Original.
Then I edited the picture to line things up and highlight it a bit.
To me, if you rotated the crank back just a little, I think the dots would line up ok. I tried to draw a blue line through the center line of the crank and the cam gear, it shows the alignment better that way.
Anyone else want to chime in here????

......nice work Dawg.......but I wouldn't trust a digital pic to sight things in line............wouldn't the pic have to be taken at true dead centre to get a correct reading???????
I don't think digital cameras are capable of checking engineering tolerances, If nastee383 has doubts, he should check it manually...........

the gear is installed correctly. There is always a certain amount of slack in the chain.
does the cam gear have adjustability?
Is that a second key-way in the crank gear?

Just remember to set them at 12' 12' for TDC firing on #1. Easy way to get your distributor 180 off.

Re: What are the Consequences of This? (Fevre)
Fevre I have never seen a timing set offset, but that's not to say it isn't so!
I always confirm TDC, but its easy to get in a hurry and get the distributor 180 off, been there done that.

Re: What are the Consequences of This? (nastee383)
Well, no one ID'd the "other" problem. Notice the hole on the cam lock next to the cam bolt? Shouldn't there be something in that hole?? Like the locating dowel on the cam? I'm surprised at you guys especially after I screwed it up just to quiz you!
What is this 12 and 12 stuff? The cam dot should be at 6 and the crank dot at 12, right? The motor is in shortblock form so I have view of the actual piston location for TDC.

I hope that you mean that you bent over the locking tangs on the cam bolts.
