Default Help with Fuel Tank Purchase :)

I want to get this thing rolling I need a tank for my 73 Vette. Since to have mine boiled and cleaned would probably be about the same price as new I think I should just start with a new one. Where would be the best place to purchase the tank?

Thank you everyone for your important imput.

Clifton,

Regardless of who is selling the tanks in the Corvette aftermarket, the only manufacturer of quality replacement fuel tanks is Quanta.

http://www.quantaproducts.com/

Quanta makes quality reproduction parts and I believe that they offer the correct tank for your 1973 Corvette.

Your fuel tank may still be available from GM as well, but I would probably want to inspect one to see if any changes had been made from the original configuration as GM often does. My guess is that even if it is still available in the correct configuration from GM, the Quanta part is just is good and will be less expensive too.

Good luck with the '73!

I bought mine from http://www.classiccarautoparts.com/c..._gastanks.html
It's made buy Spectra in Canada. Ordered on Sunday and installed it Tuesday. They are in northern Minnesota.

David,

I stand corrected... Never heard of Spectra and was not aware of anyone willing to invest in the tooling required to challenge Quanta.

What is your take on the construction/configuration of the fuel tank from Spectra? Is it identical to the GM part or does it differ in some way(s)?

Hmmm - bunch of tanks on Ebay right now at $160. They are the SPI tanks (at classiccarautoparts.com) So, for $168 retail, I would get them from the retailer.

The big question: is the Quanta tank worth the extra $30 ?
Is the only difference the original manufacturer's stamp on the bottom ?

I need to decide, too !!!

Bought mine from Quanta, $30.00is chump change and worth getting the stamping, if nothing else you have the correct tank if you ever decide to go factory correct.

The tank from http://www.classiccarautoparts.com/c..._gastanks.html is identical to my original with the exeption of the O.L. Anderson logo on it. I think the box had a some GM marking on it, but I don't recall what. I still have the box and can check. It did come with fillerneck screws and gasket, and the sending unit gasket. The total cost delivered to my door was $201 (6.5% was MN sales tax because they are in MN also).

be on the safe side, mine was leaking on passenger muffler, thought it was good time to fix this so i dont have a total rebuild.

I got mine from Quanta, $199.00. Excellent quality and it comes with the sending unit locking ring, o-ring and the special filler neck bolts. I don't know if that adds up to the extrat $30 but the quality is there. Good product.

here is their order on line web site http://www.gastanks.com/

I just installed a new tank in my '70. I am pretty sure I ordered from Corvette Central (I don't have the catalog in front of me right now) and it cost about $200 shipped to my door. It included the filler neck screws/gasket as well as the rubber sending unit gasket. It appears to be identical to my factory tank except for an additional breather vent - maybe for an evaporator canister? I am happy with the results - I can now put more than 2 gallons of gas in the car without creating a fire hazard!

Your original 76 tank has a rubber bladder inside. The tank can rust through,
and it will not leak. However, there are also reports of the bladder tearing
and the gas getting between the bladder and tank. This effectively reduces the
usable tank capacity.

The replacement has you remove the top ring portion of the bladder (cut it off).
Then you use this ring as a sealing gasket when installing the sender unit on top.

I'm still undecided, but I will probably go with the Quanta, unless I can find a
better deal on a new one from SPI.

Thanks gang for all of this info. I think I will go with quanta since there is only a 30.oo spread. But I think I will do some modifications to the tank so really I do not know if there is an advantage with Quanta or not but it does seem to be the tank of choice.

Again Thanks Gang I am sure I will have many more requests in the near future.

Me too...for the 72. Before shipping, they emailed me to make sure what they sent was correct for my application (vapor canister connection on drivr side of tank)

Just wanted to say that I ordered my tank from Quanta Products today and spoke to a Roy which was very friendly and helpful with my purchase. I would not hesitate again to call them.

One more thing to add lol. I also purchased the sending unit wrench so when I am done and if any member needs to borrow it. Let me know. Have a great day.
