Valve covers are semi-flat black with bare metal accents on my '80 L-82.

L T ; For a different twist on the covers; I bought a pair of used L-82 covers a few years ago and they have been sitting in the garage collecting dust. A few weeks ago, I had them bead blasted and was going to repaint the valve covers black. Brfore doing this I thought I would play around with one and see if I could polish it. I started sanding with a 320 grit, went to a 400 then 600 then 1200grit. The valve cover started looking very nice. I continued with a 1500 grit, then some polish rugue red then white and finally with some mothers polish. The valve cover looks great. I will be doing the other one this weekend. The polished aluminum is the way I will leave mine.

I used semigloss high heat paint. Fully strip the covers and clean (I used the dishwasher with excellent results). After painting take a medium frit sandpaper and sand off the paint on the fins. They came out like new and have held up over (3) years so far.

I had mine powerdcoated semi-black, that way it will resist oil, gas & chipping and it shines right up

Go for the polished look! They look cheap when they're painted black. I have a set of chrome LT-1 style covers and they look fantastic.

I have the black ones on my 79 L-82. I have the polished aluminum (LT1 style) on my Z28. I think they both look good, but the polished aluminum show dirt and grime faster and require more maintenance to look good. But when they look good, they do look GOOD.

That's my $0.02
