Quick question for C3 guys...
Gotta friend I play racketball with. He has a problem. When his C3 gets to operating temperature and he turns it off, he can't restart until it cools way back down. Symtumaic of anything in the C3?...Told him I would check the Forum and see if you guys had any observations on his problem. I'll print your responses and hand to him for his consideration...-C4- :flag

He has heat soak of the starter. He can try to cover the starter with a metal sheild or thermal wrap to keep header heat away or he can go with a mini starter.
That usually seems to be the fix.

Same opinion here. Heat soak. It seems to be very common on C3 vettes. There is a small heat shield that is supposed to be there but more often than not, the shield is awol.

My 78 would do the same thing. It had one of the copper jumpers burnt into.
Nick on one of the wires going to starter. I had strater rebuilt. It seems to be doing ok now. Have your friend to check amp gauge when he tries to strart it.
If voltage drops, shows voltage getting to starter, if not some other problem.

Change the whole starter, it was about $40 at NAPA when my '79 did the same thing. Make sure the solenoid states "HI TEMP", its brown in color. The cheap discounts auto stores skimp out on the solenoid. I put a Moroso heat shield for another $45 and hadn't had a problem in two years.
Good luck

Actually the fix is a shorter solenoid spring. I bought a new ACDelco solenoid and installed the shorter spring (can't find the ACDelco part number right now). Two years in the Texas heat has proven this fix!!!

I'd also check the negative battery cable. It goes from the neg batt terminal, thru the storage compartment and bolts to the frame under the battery compartment. If this is corroded, then this could cause a similar problem.

Why not invite him to the forum

It does sound like heat-soak.
Might just need a new solenoid - not the whole starter.
I would not surrender my old starter to a discount store for a core.
The older starters have a nice cast iron nose - not the cheapo aluminum.
While he's looking at the starter, he should check that the support bracket
is not missing - from the tail end of the starter to the block.

Just to give more variety to the responses, I'll say it needs a remote solenoid.
My big block has a remote solenoid installed by the previous owner and I have never had a hot start problem in all the time I've owned it (right at 2 years).
