I am converting from a Holley 4160/3810 to a new Edelbrock 1406 carb. I have done a mock-up with an Edelbrock air filter assembly as the stock air cleaner base does not clear the electric choke. The Edelbrock assembly sits about 1 1/2 to 2" higher than stock because it does not drop as deep so I may have a hood clearance problem. I can eliminate the 0.32" heat insulator/spacer that I had planned to install but still things look tight on initial glance. My next thought is to replace the 3" air filter with a 2" unit. Do they exist in that height? Any manufacturers/part numbers?

Hi; Don't know if this will help, but when I re-built my small block, I installed a performance intake which was 3/4 inches higher than stock, also put a edelbrock 1411 carb,,, all this under a stock 1973 l-48 houd,,, now it was clear that I couldn't use a stock air filter so I shopped around and found the edelbrock Pro-flo #1002. its a small triangular, 3 inches high. The nice thing about it is if you have good workmanship, you can easely trim the bottom ring up to 3/4 inches,, and if realy nececary you can even trim a good 1/2 inch on the top. for me I only removed 1/2 inch on the ring,, and fits like a glove, I did some testing and even under high tork it dosen't touche the houd...........for you to decide............
By the way, this carb has electric choke.

Thanks Fevre. I prefer not to use K&N but that link does suggest to me that there is a standard 14 x 2 equivalent on the market or K&N would not offer a replacement. I will look for that filter locally later this week.

I thank you for that suggestion but I plan to use the Edelbrock base (to clear the choke) and the stock top plate as shown. I am trying to keep things pretty well stock while using modern carb technology. There will be some compromises of course. The parts yet to arrive are a Russell/Edelbrock steel carb line with filter and an SS filter to fuel pump line. I do not want any rubber in the fuel feed system. And that will obviously be different from stock.

Thanks Ed. The Holley is acting up: running rich and peeing a bit. My concern is fire. I thought I would put it in the basement and go for a rebuild next winter. And use an Edelbrock for this summer. But the conversion is turning out to be a bit complicated. In retrospect I should have purchased a new Holley to avoid all the twists and turns. But hindsight is always 20-20. I will sort matters out.

I did a three-hour run yesterday morning and the car ran well aside from the richness. So I am not disabled. What static timing did you use? It is at 10 BTDC now but the manual says 6.
