Should my hose be swelling & hard?
Just installed new upper & lower rad hoses. I believe they are GM. They are the correct hoses for my vehicle and appear to be of good quality.
Today, while working under the hood with the motor running, and after the car reached operating temp., I noticed that both hoses were swelling. I tried to squeeze the upper hose and it was hard. It had some flex to it, but nothing like when the motor is not running. The hoses didn't look like they were about to burst and were not distorted, but the swelling was definitely noticeable.
Is this normal or do I have air trapped in the system? Overheating?
Thanks in advance,
D. Ocean

Sounds like you have a good gulp of air in the system...

This may sound a bit silly, but check your raidator cap. It sounds like the fluid is expanding, but not going anywhere.

Anything making it into the reservoir? Did you flow test the rad? Someone also mentioned above to check the cap

OK. We gotta bunch of comedians tonight...
Thermostat is new. Radiator cap is new. Radiator just tanked & flushed.
So...are the hoses supposed to be this way during normal operation?

Are the hoses new? are they a decent brand????
Yeah they should harden up some, but you shouldn't actually see them swelling. I would say you have some steam building up from an air pocket, but even that should dissipate after a few minutes running time.
Oh, and if you wait until the swelling goes away. your almost assured of not getting anyone pregnant.

Heat builds after you shut the engine off..The hoses will get hard assuming you have the engine warmed up.The pressure won't bleed off until it cools. If you have say a 15 lb. cap the pressure can be up to 15 psi (pounds per square inch) in the system. That's normal.... Just don't remove the cap while there is pressure in the system.

Well...as in my case...some hoses swell bigger and harder than others.
I'm just not sure it's a good thing in this instance.
