MSD 6AL Guys. A question for you on REV gaurd pills?
Just curious if any of you guys have ever had any issues with your rev gaurd pills causing you any problems? I read a number of articles on MSD's website where guys have had problems with different pills either not working correctly, causing a miss, or not actually rev gaurding at the RPM they are rated at. Some of the people that were having the problems removed the pill completely and the problem disapeared but then they have no Rev gaurd.
Anyone seen this issue before?

They are not reliable, my 6000RPM chip cut in the rev limiter well before 6000RPM's on my last chassis dyno. Some guys install the chip and rev the motor out till it hits the limiter then they have a better idea when it will cut in.
Probably just a resistor and if that's the case then there is a tolerance (+-5% or maybe lower but could be higher ) and resistors also change with heat

On my Dyno pull my shift light and rev limiter were about right.....+ or - a couple of RPM....
Light is set for 5800 RPM and Rev Limiter at 6000 RPM.
Don't know what was screwing up....we did 6 pulls and had readings ranging from 273 HP to 383 HP and 487 TQ to 539 TQ.....Guy claims it's my torque converter has no lock up switch so its hunting.
Could also be my fault too.....when the motor was getting close to redline with the pipes uncapped....it was so loud.....All I could think of was "RUN AWAY" "RUN AWAY".....Was very spooky....This was a "Ricer Shop" if the car came off the drum I would end up straight into the back wall. They were tying the straps to the struts when I told them not strong those things....me go bang into wall very hard Maybe hurt for long time.

Interesting. First I've heard of it. Mine appears to be working (6AL), but I am judging it against the factory mech tach (arguably not the most accurate). Anyway when at the drags and I run it out a bit instead of shifting, I can feel the rev limiter cutting in. Charles

Never had a problem with mine but I have noticed that some parts stores sell off brand pills.

If you have a digital multimeter, you could check the resistance value of the pills. See this link at corvettefaq.com and look up "Make your own MSD pills"

I have never experienced a problem but recently switched to the variable one that allows me to just turn a **** to get the desired rpm.
With a really strong motor it is impossible to watch the tac, the shift light and wait for the rev limiter to kick in.
Things happen too fast. I set the shift light at 6200 to try and catch the motor before the 7000 rev limit kicks in.

My 5800 pill died. I went out to start the car one morning and nothing. After troubleshooting for about 30 minutes I took the rev pill out of the box "just to see what would happen" and it fired right up. I now have the 6000 pill in ther ans have not had a problem since. All they are is resistors so you could make your own.

I used to run my engine to just over 7k when I was at the track, as Norval said strong motors just run up too fast. I let a friend drive my vette and he missed a shift and from the passenger seat I saw that needle go high 7's - I now have a 6k pill in the MSD - it actually kicks in at 5700 which for regular driving/cruising is just fine and even moreso gives me a comfort level if anyone else happens to jump in the drivers seat. If I ever take this vette back to the track the pill comes out and the Edel Perf 750 off and back to my Holley 4779 just for the passes.

I have noticed the same thing. I had a 5600 rpm in my MSD. Sometimes it cuts out at around 5200 rpm's or 5600 never over 5600 though. I have already twisted one engine into the trash can. by over revving. So now I keep a 5000rpm chip in all the time. What driver on the street needs to rev over 5000 rpm's anyway.
