What brand (and part number if you remember) of header gasket do you recommend for a L48 with stock heads?

Any parts store has the correct gasket. This is not really a critical gasket in terms of high vs. low quality (for stock heads and manifolds)

If you are running headers I have had great luck with Earl's graphite ones:



The inserts are replacable and can be trimmed to match the port size, there are a few diff pre-cut port sizes avail or you can get them uncut and do the matching yourself.

One of my good buddies recommended I throw out the stock gaskets for my Hookers and get some Hi-Temp RTV stuff. I think its like a gel maybe or something? But he said its great. Anyone know anything about this?

It is a copper colored gasket maker just like the black permatex used for intakes and the like. My formula had it on it when I bought it and I do not appear to have any header leaks.

I use the plain paper gaskets that come with the headers. BUT I soak them in hot water just before I install them for a couple of hours if possible , once installed i run the motor up to temp and then retighten the header bolts and check them about every 3 days and retighten , after about 2 weeks of this your through and can drive till something breaks , i did this exact thing on my 4x4 blazer and did not loose a gasket for 3 years till a long stud broke off in the head that went through the headers to hold the p/s bracket , i also had Ultra copper sealer on the gasket on my 4x4 since i did not care what it looked like under the hood , it was mostly red clay colored anyway , i did not use this sealer on my vette, but it had not developed a leak for several years mostly not driven though, Blazer i drove every day ,

I'm in agreement with you 1000% I have had my headers on/off and still havent had to change the sealing material! The best gasket ever!

I use ordinary Silicone RTV. No leaks after 2 1/2 years. you can even use the clear stuff. Helps if you have the flanges straight before you fit them with all sealing methods.

The graphoil gaskets are the best. Your bolts will not get loose.
