Default thinking of Swaping in a 700r4

First off .. Hello ... New to the forum been reading an doing some searchs
Figured I would just ask maybe you can point me to some good places for info.
I have a 1974 with what I believe to be the th400 trans, I would like to get an over drive trans in it. I picked up a th700r4 for what I think was a good deal ... of course after I did a few searches here I see that a th200r4 would be better suted.
So on to my question... can any one tell me what all is involved in swaping in the 700r4? Any links to write ups on it would welcome also.

First off make sure the trans is in good shape as they are expensive to rebuild --the 400 support will work but most likely have to be relocated and the drive shaft will have to be shortned then there is the need for a tv cable and it needs to be adjusted just so pressure gauges a must--but in the long run it seems worth it--i just went thru it with my 55 chevy just this week good luck --Glenn a good web site is http://www.700r4.com

There are desirable 700r4s, and undesirable 700r4s. You'll want one made in '87 or later with a 30 spline input shaft.

Check this out:

And may I suggest contacting forum member "BSeery". We swapped 700r4s in his '80 a few weeks back, so he's a good person to discuss this with.

That is what I was also told to use in my 66. I am running a th350 carb. engine. I am switching to a TPI and was told to switch to a 200 4R. it is suppose to be the same size as the TH350 and I will not have to shorten the drive shaft. My understanding it has overdrive. I guess it has an electric lockup also. I am still trying to find what car and year they were in.

Either the 700R4 or 200-4R will work.
700R4:
TV cable hook-up
Painless wiring kit to work the lock-up convertor
New cross member
Shortening the driveshaft
Universal to match yoke to driveshaft
Detent plate for shifter to position in the correct spot for gears
Neutral safety switch needs to be modified

200-4R
TV cable hook-up
Painless wiring kit to work the lock-up convertor
Universal to match yoke to driveshaft
Detent plate for shifter to position in the correct spot for gears
Neutral safety switch needs to be modified

i did this conversion in 2000, in addition to the above list, the passenger side exhaust must be re- configured to bend around the front corner of the 700r4 trans. a new crossmember is not necessary, but a new trans mount is. check out bowtieoverdrives website. i got my tranny from them, and now they offer a new crossmember that will help routing the exhaust. also sometimes finding the driveshaft to trans yoke can be difficult, new ones are available i think, just expensive, i used mine off the original th350 trans. i used a TPI wiring kit with a manifold vacuum switch to activate lock-up in 4th gear, this was wired to a bosch relay and to my brake light circuit to de-activate lock-up. the drivshaft must be shortened, just measure the difference in length from the th400 vs the 700r4 trans, this is the amount the driveshaft will have to be shortened. you will also want to buy a valve plunger kit that changes 4th to 3rd kickdown, 2 available, one kicks down at 75% full throttle and the other at 85% full throttle. i filed the detent plate in the shifter with a file to put in the extra notch, this was easier and quicker that replacing the detent switch than the one that comes in the kit, you'll still need the shift kit for the OD plate that goes in the console,P R N OD D 2 1.
