Default Clearance: Tire to Spring

How much clearance is required between the rear spring and the tire for safety?

Agreed, good question. Am curious to hear the answer. The guy doing some work on my Vette has a body off restored 70 sitting in his shop right now the clearance on that car is absolutely no more than 1/2", maybe less. It looks like it would shred the sidewall on a hard turn, but apparently they have no problem with it.

What does he have? 15 16 17 18. then again, with 17 and over there
is not much tire flex.

I think they're 16's but I'm not sure on that. Next time I venture over there (tomorrow), I'll take a look.

I'll be real happy if it's 1/2". I could go up a tire size.

I just asked our tech adviser Robin this question and he said that there should be one inch of clearance between the tire and rear spring.

Anything less than an inch seems to me an accident waiting to happen.

VBP, Do you make a shorter spring? I have your 360 in it now. What other options are there? Wheel spacers and even bigger tires might make my car look like a John Deer.

I know that Guldstrand sells a shorter spring. I have 17" rims on mine and the spring is inside the wheel so tire clearance isn't an issue for me. But in a couple weeks I will have Guldstrand rebuild the rear suspention and they want to use the shorter spring anyway.

I have BFG Radial T/A size 275/60/R15 and they have about 1/2" of clearance from the spring. I've never had any problem with them clearing the spring and i've been driving with these tires for a year and a half.
Hope that helps. (can't wait to get a 502 in mine!)

Jay M, I will check out their web site. Thanks. What are you doing for traction?

75_STINGRAY, I have one inch now so that is encouraging. Thanks.

It really depends what part of the tire it is near. If it's 1/2" from a near-the-rim part of the tire, you are fine. But if it's 1/2" and any lower, you're in trouble. Ask me how I know Obviously this is because where the tire contacts the rim, it's not really moving.

And I think 1" is still cutting it too close.
