Depending on the ability to get into a tight place, I've had good luck cutting a slot into broken bolts with a dremel and using an impact screwdriver to back out the bolt. Your mileage may vary.

If you have to drop the rear end to remove the cover, just install a HD one to eliminate the potential of snapping the ears off next.

Get an extended length drill bit and carefully hit the center of the bolts. Drill deep enough to get an extractor in there (I have had the best luck with the tapered square ones, not the ones that look like a screw). Using an appropriate sized 8-point socket and extension to hold the extractor see if they will come out without a lot of effort. If they are really stuck, get some heat on the casting around the threads and try again.

Hitting the center of the bolt is important,so you don't snap off a extractor, thereby making it worse than it is.I've had the best luck with the ones Snap On sells, seem to be stronger. Its not a really big deal to do yourself, just take your time and if possible shoot some penetrating oil around the bolts to help before you try.

I've had good luck using FeedVaal's way. Start with PBlaster and MAPP gas. Cut grove with a Dremel and heat the poopie out of it adding PBlaster to it. Then use a screwdriver to go back & forth till it comes out.

A drop or two of 'BreakFree CLP' (available in quality gun stores) on the bolt threads, let sit for 24 hours at least. You'll wind up using less or no heat, less or little force. Did it with mine- a bolt I torched off to get the diff out was spun out with fingers...I know it sounds odd, but it worked! I'm now a believer!

Sears sells some eazyouts for bolts that have worked for me in the past. The only question is can you get in there with a drill?
