Default Differential, removing the housing from the carrier.

I am trying to remove the carrier from the differential housing. I have the instructions posted on rebuilding the differential, but I cannot seem to get the housing out. Does anyone have any pointers on how to get it out, it seems stuck.

The side yokes are still in, the bearing caps are marked and off and the pinion nut is off. I am afraid to pry to hard, I dont want to chip or break anything. Do I just need to pry harder? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Remove the snap rings if still on the yokes. The carrier bearigns are pre-loaded meaning the carrier is in the tight. Sometimes you can get a pry bar on th eedge of the carrier opening and lift it out, other times I use a 9/19" box wrench on one of the ring gear bolts and rotate the pinion by hand until the wrench hits against the housing and walks the carrier out, lastly I have a case spreader but hardly use it.

. You will also have shims on each end of the posi. Take a pice of tape and mark it so you know which side it came out of. It will make it a lot easier when you want to reinstall and set it up.

Thanks for the replies! Got the snap rings off, not easily but they are off and the yokes are out as is the carrier.

I removed the carrier, removed the pinion nun and pressed out the pinion gear.

Tonight I hope to press off bearings, remove the ring gear bolts and ring gear. I hope to get to the point of checking the posi gears.

How hard is it to remove the ring gear from its mount?

The ring gear is pressed on the carrier. I use a rubber mallet and tap it off, just don't drop it. Save the pinion shim for re-use. The carrier bearings come off with a good 2 jaw puller. Snap-ON makes a nice thin leg one but I use a Craftsman with a impact wrench to pop them off. Check the carrier for cracks. replace the clutches if they are worn or the slotted type. Use solid steel clutches.

I have finally got the carrier back in with new side yokes. After alot of assembly and reassembly I got the backlash at 6 thousandths and a good pinion pattern on the ring gear. I now am just beadblasting the rear cover.

Thanks for the replies to my questions.

I am glad I took on the differential myself. The idea was to do it myself to learn and enjoy the journey, which I did...most of the time.

Did you get the pinion nut preloaded again?
