Fiberglass experts...please help
Here's the deal: I have an old hi-rise hood for my '79 that needs some work. A while ago, I purchased some Kardol Poly Shield Hand Lay-Up Resin to do the repairs. Is this what I use if I am making surface repairs? Will this act as the gel coat? I'm pretty creative and particular about everything I do, I just want to make sure I am using the right stuff. In other words, after I use this to make the repairs, can I prime over it? Thanks alot in advance.....Mike

I use the fiberglass mat for big changes, structural pieces. I try to get close with it.
I also like the random fiber type, seems to show the pattern through less.
Then I use a short strand fiberglass filler for the final finishing.
then a 2 part epoxy primer
then a sanding primer
then paint...
Gelcoat is for bassboats

So is the resin what I use to mat down the fiberglass? I sure hope so, because it's a done deal now. Thanks for the help.

And as said before, use an epoxy primer to seal everything up. Much easier than gel coat and just as good if not better. Cover the epoxy with another sealer/ surfacer such as ppg K36. Sand and shape, prime, sand and shape, prime etc. until the surface and shape is perfect. Just before painting, sand with 600 grit, tack rag and spray the color coat.
Good luck!
