1977 Stingray?
OK, I need an opinion here.
I recently picked up a pretty origonal 77 coupe that I'm doing a frame on resto. The interior is done and the drive train is getting close.
Paint is next, and that's where I'm butting heads with my girlfriend. It's a late 77, so it has the crossed flag emblem on the fenders and the alarm switch in the door.
I really, really want to dump the crossed flags on the front fenders and put on the Stingray script that was used from 1969-1976. I have already changed the interior color from dark brown to black and the paint is gonna be some other color than the origonal Corvette Tan it left St Louis with.
Point being, I'm trying to put together a nice clean driver, not a perfect restoration, so I'm not concerned about being 100% correct. 77's are really not that collectable, so I figure why bother?
She is having a fit about the putting "Stingray" on a car that's "Not a Stingray" (her words) Says's it's like putting ZR-1 on an L-98 or LT-1 on a base motor 72.
I just like the way "Stingray" looks better than the flags.
What do you guys n gals think? Is she being ****, or should I stick with the flags, even if Stingray looks better???

Dude, it's your car do what you want. If she doesn't like she doesn't have to ride in it. I am chick and I say she can have something better to bicker about with that car. Like if you were gonna spend four grand and get a SC. LOL So what you want dude, it's your car and you need to be happt with the end product!

Yeah, she definatly "gets it" we have been together for 12 years and met via LVCA (Las Vegas Corvette Assocation). She is as big of a "Corvette Nut" as I am, and she can hang with the best of them. I've seen her out drive, out wrench and out bench race more that one person... And she's a hottie too :yesnod:
Her point is I'm would be trying to present the car as something it's not. And I get that. Maybe it shouldn't, but it irks me when I see a ZR-1 emblem on an 88 roadster. Clearly, it's not a ZR-1, so don't advertise it as such...

Yeah, It's my car, but it's gonna be registered in both our names, and she'll drive it as often as I do. Personalized plates are already transfered off of her 89 she just sold to the 77 reading "4SUGAR".
When I had my 72 I had numerous folks ask me "is it a Stingray?" I then had to explain the whole "they all are stingrays from 63 to 76, except 68's deal. It's just a tag. 1967 427 L-88 had the tag, no option low HP 75 had the same tag...
I guess what I'm asking is if you saw the car at a show, with Stingray on the fender, would it bother you that "It's not a Stingray"

Stingray is just a name, nothing more. If you like the emblem, use it. The 69-76 that used the Stingray name did not have any extra equipment/options other than the emblems.

Bubba says that '77's are stingrays-- you can see the emblem right there in the cowling where Bubba put it.

sounds like your car is the L82 Model only they had the flags on the side that year and early 77s had the alarm in the fender if it was a l82 i would keep it stock unless u r just gonna use it as a daily driveing car :auto:

The comparison between putting ZR-1 badges on a stock L98 versus putting Stingray badges on a '77 is absurd. The ZR-1 was a totally different car compared to the others. Whereas if you put Stingray badges on your '77, no one is going to notice except the purists. It's still very much the same car as the '76! So think of those badges as a "purist filter."

Actually the very early 77's had no fender emblems at all with the alarm in the fender, L82 or base motor. Later on they added the crossed flags to the alarm switch on the fender.
Later production cars moved the alarm swithces to the door and kept the crossed flags on the front fenders.
My car is a very late 77 near the end of the cycle. It has several 78 parts in it, most notibaly the fuse panel and combined seatbelt/door ajar/key buzzer/timer. The 68-76 cars had seperate buzzers and circuits.
I sure wish it was an L82, but alas, it's just an base engine/auto trans. The good news is it's matching numbers and still has the smog pump, ignition shielding and even the catalitic converter and origonal exhaust in place.
And the price was right at $2000...
