black box mounted to gas tank
Okay........bear with me. There is a small black box device mounted on the driver's side of the gas tank. One line comes from this and goes to the stainless line that is going to the front of the car. There is also a line that comes from the tank that is supposed to hook into the same black box device. That is the one that is not connected. What is the name of the black box device so I can get a new one?

I think it is called a fuel separator. It has to due with the charcol cannister. That is where the line to the front hooks up. I took all of my lines out and just plugged this tube coming out of the tank. Not really needed.

carl, because in every thread you post you also manually insert your pic it always ends up listed as a topic with a pic in it. If you want to post your pic may I suggest placing it in your signature so it is inserted automatically? The problem is that when you see the little photocamera icon you expect there's a pic in the post and when nothing appears it always seems something is not loading but in this case it's your pic that triggers it.

:iagree: I see a thread with a pic and I check it out, then I realize that it is not a pic of the topic discussed. It's a little annoying.

maybe not the only one but certainly one of a select group :D
Just copy and paste the following into your signature (in your profile area) and it will work, however when posting make sure the box "include signature" or whatever is checked. Do you see other peoples signatures? If not you have sig viewing turned off in your preferences, then it will noit show any sigs, not even your own.
Here's the code:

Re: black box mounted to gas tank (carl a)
To return to the topic.........I , also, need to know about this 'little black box'...every time I've filled my tank all the way to the top, there has been a leak-no leak when I don't fill it all the way to the top...the tank is relatively new, I believe, it is nice and shiny inside with no apparent 'stuff' accumulated in it...so, is my leak coming from a line on this black box/vapor seperator?
If so, and this 'seperator isn't needed, how did you plug it? with what?
Thanks.

Re: black box mounted to gas tank (Twin_Turbo)
you can plug it if you run a vented gas cap.
That is the fuel vapor separator. It is a one-way check valve that keep raw fuel from going into the charcoal canister behind the drivers side front 1/4 panel gills. When you fill the tank all the way the check valve closes by the height of the fuel. When the tank level drops the valve opens to vent fuel vapors draw in from the carb through the charcoal canister. If you plug the line you need to use a vented cap but you should also cap the carb vacuum fitting.
Edit - If you have a leak it is probably the small rubber sections of hose from the separator and the frame hard lines. As said before - hope its not the separator because this $1 in 1971 $$$$$$'s cost 50 or more times that now. They are not made but you can get a used one. I just thought of this.....has anyone crossed this part with other GM cars of the era? I would think that was an "off the shelf" part and not Corvette specific?????? ANYONE?ANYONE?????????BUELLER?????????

I actually removed mine because when the tank was full, I could smell gasoline. I knew how hard these little suckers were to find and how expensive they were when you could find one. They are discontinued by Chevrolet and nobody makes a reproduction. After determining that mine was sound, I investigated further and found that my cork gasket between the tank and filler neck had disintegrated with time. Cost to repair: $4.00. If you smell unburned gas when you have a full tank of gas, that gasket is the first think to check and the easiest thing in the world to replace. :)
