Default Plastic behind Door Panel

Has anyone changed this plastic out? My understanding is that it's job is to divert water inside the doors where it drains out the bottom. What kind of caulking did you use? Any other advice?

TIA

I used heavy mill plastic sheeting cut to fit and ran a thin bead of butyl rubber caulk around the door frame to secure it

I have searched to find these aftermarket with no success. My body man says they just use heavy guage plastic and trace the original. I have used those black self stick sound panels as well. they dampen sound real nice and keep water out. The downside is that if you need to work inside the door, they are a hassle.

Aren't you supposed to tear those off and dispose of properly - like the
plastic covering of a new stereo face plate ?

J/K - heavy plastic from Home Depot and butyl caulking from the car parts
store - although I have not done this, yet.

Although it helps to keep moisture off the pressboard door panels, they also
keep the draft out ... maybe more important on your DD than the vette.

Thanks guys - butyl rubber it is. I'm putting my interior back together and figured with new carpet I might as well try to keep it dry.

I am trying to use that same sort of plastic sheet. I thought 2-part Plastic Epoxy would really do it, but apparently it's not meant to work with that kind of plastic! Just fell off. Thanks for the tip on the butyl caulking!

I use the spray trim adhesive. 3m has it as well as your closest hardware store.

:iagree: :iagree: Calk will harden, and have to be scraped off and replaced everytime you do any door work. The tape is much like the original stuff used, so your plastic can be removed and put back numerous times.

Thanks a million for this post. I just did my drivers door and used caulk strips from one of the calalogs. Well the stuff was messy and I had to put it in the freezer so I could pull it off the plastic it came on. It was a pain to do it and I didn't like how it came out. Now I will look for this butyl tape and try that.
Do you guys think getting a heavier guage piece of plastic will make any differance?
Thanks,
Bob

Vapor barrior. Duct taped mine back. Will keep watching it. Hadden't learned from other CF'ers or I'd used the rubber butyl. Anywho... if you door panel is warped you might try this. Did this last fall and has held true thru winter & spring. Nothing to lose given the $ of replace panel. Lower forward fiberoard hook missing. Bolted a METAL bracket [4 hole] in its place. Used Elmers CARPENTERS glue to fill/solidify the hole/threads. Reinstalled the origional door panel. It's been tight since OCT. We'll see.
