Default Cigerette lighter questions

This started at http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=827046 and I have 2 problems.

1. the cigerette lighter blows fuses as soon as the lighter is put into the lighter recepticle. My multimeter reads OL with the lighter in. With the lighter out the recepticle reads 0.00 The recepticle is brand new. What gives?

2. the ashtray door is loose and opens half way when driving. The tracks are intact but maybe the tracks are worn down. Any ideas.

Does it blow the fuse when you put the lighter in, or push it down? Make sure the connectors are tight & crimps are good. Whats the amps of the fuse in the cig light position?

Make sure that the plug in heating element is the right one for the socket.

There should be a spring to hold the door closed it may have fell off or broke.

71 coupe - It blows the fuse when you put the lighter in not yet pushed down, the connectors are tight. The amps of the fuse is 5.

w1ctc - The heating element is on back order it's off a Riviera and looks to be the same.

78Vette - There is no spring on the 68-72 doors their different.

The door tracks have to be replaced....a very common problem. You can also put a little dab of reusable adhesive (it's like putty) up in each corner....holds the door closed real nice.

I would only use a correct element for the lighter. It should say on the barrel "63 CASCO 12v" . I also had a repo that said "Made in the USA 78 CASCO 12v" that worked just fine. :chevy

That's weird. You said it's a new piece - what was wrong with the old one?
If you put in something other than a cig lighter (like a cell phone charger)what happens? Without the lighter element, try to wiggle the receptical fwd and back & see if that does the same thing.

In any case, you have a direct short to ground and the lighter element completes the circuit. Wires might be crossed.

Good luck

I DON'T SMOKE (cigarettes :D ). I have a "wind proof" lighter. "Spark it up" @ 70 mph with the top down...NO PROBLEM

Otherwise... NO CIG LIGHTER & NO CUP HOLDERS

Let's see, no wipers, no A/C, no heat, no radio (it doesn't work) exhaust toooo loud, no power anything except for breaks.

Your fuse for a real cigarette lighter is supposed to be like 20 amps or so, thats why the can get red hot in 15 or 20 seconds.

I'll try both the cell phone charger and also a higher amp fuse. The heating element is on order (stock item)

David,
The 68 chevrolet chassis service manual calls for a 20 amp fuse for the cig. lighter.

I put a nokia cell phone charger in and it didn't blow so it's the element. I also placed on order new door tracks and ashtray to return it to as new. thanks for the help.

BTW when your 6'4" getting to that fuse box is a real PITA!
