Another sidepipe question!
Now that my JC whitney sidepipes have been on the car I know that I wont go back to the traditional setup, my problem now is with my BB and headers I go from a three inch pipe from the header down to the two inch inlet pipe. My motor is really down on power and does not want to rev, has anyone tried getting ride of the fake pipes and just making a three or three and half inch pipe and conecting to the side pipes. Or should I just bite the bullet and buy the HOOKER headers and pipes!!!!

Re: Another sidepipe question! (467-Ratman)
I did one years ago where I took the sidepipes and removed the fake portion. I went to a truck shop and got a 90 degree chrome elbow of the same size. I think it was a four inch exhaust size. I then bought a reducer to bring it down to 3 inch and hooked the whole thing up to the collectors on the headers. I did not like the fake look. Besides, water and dirt collects on the junction of the multiple pipes and promotes corrosion. The newer mod setup is much easier to clean and looks much better. It looked one of a kind and worked very well.

Re: Another sidepipe question! (Sharky Guam)
Do you think going with the bigger tube from the headers will help, the side pipe has I think about a 2.5" inside diameter with baffles.

Re: Another sidepipe question! (1FUNVET)
Ratman, I don't want to say......! Anyway, I think on alot of the old "road race" Vettes had the one big pipe coming off the header/exhaust manifold and then I guess gradually stepping up to 4" by the time it got to coming out the side of the car. A good guy to ask would "REDVETRCR" or "REDVETRACR". Not all of them had the "Hooker" style.
I would send back to J.C.W. and tell them "They are defective". Then call your credit card company and disput it. 99.9% they side with the cardholder.

Stingraymaniac, Do you have a small block or big block? The smaller tubes might be better setup for a small block......

Re: Another sidepipe question! (467-Ratman)
yeah maybe
i have a 327 in my car.
your engine is perhaps alittle too big for a 2 inch tube :yesnod:
my car is going pretty much the same as it did with my old dual
exhaust, but it sounds ten times better!

Re: Another sidepipe question! (stingraymaniac)
I think its time to look into the Hooker setup, my existing header tubes are 1 3/4 tubes and the collector is 3 1/2 from there it goes into a 2 1/2 pipe then down to the 2 inch sidepipe. A friend of mine told me that its like trying to exhale out of a straw!

Your friend is right. You're hurting power potential, especially at higher revs.
The Hookers will be a big improvement. I like mine a lot... just wish the coating would hold up better. whatever you do, do NOT get the Hooker baffles/inserts. It goes from 4" pipe to 1.75". ugh. I did this and my BB wouldn't rev at all. At the time it was only making 335rwhp, too. With those stupid baffles in there it was probably ~235rwhp (don't know for sure as they were in for all of 40 miles). Bite the bullet and get the JCL inserts and uncap them (easy process). Mine flow great and my BB revs to 6500 easily.

Re: Another sidepipe question! (73'Vette)
73'Vette is right... only one place to get them. :) They will seem expen$ive, but trust me...they are well worth the extra $$. Your engine will thank you.
If you get this setup compared to what you're running now, I'd estimate 50+hp gain easily with no tuning.

Re: Another sidepipe question! (WA 2 FST)
This is what I put on my 427 - it screams! I bought the 2 1/4" oversized. Had some fit issues, but they do sound good!

Re: Another sidepipe question! (Matt69-ZO6)
Matt, Thanks for the tip on the Sweet thunder setup, for $350 plus making the pipes to the header that seems like a good price and I like the idea of the larger diameter. I am looking for strong sound and performance, they must sound great behind the Big Block? Thanks again!

Re: Another sidepipe question! (467-Ratman)
If you can weld or know someone who can, you can get a similar setup to the JCL baffles for about $65, shipping included. Heck, you could probably have a muffler shop fab them up for about $50 labor.
Patriot makes 11" auger inserts. They are available in 3" or 3.5" sizes. Here is a parts list from Summit:
3.5" auger insert, 11" long: PTE-H3843 ($10 each)
4' 3.5" aluminized tubing: SUM-640035 ($15)
Weld two augers together, cut the pipe in half and weld them in.
With this, it should be easy (especially if your willing to drill holes in the side tubes) to get them in the side tubes.
The auger inserts basically look like:
I believe there are a few here using these auger inserts.
