Default rear main leak - 1971 LS5

Do I have to pull the engine to fix the rear main seal leak.

If there are any other input for my previous posting 'mysterious component - 1971'??????????????

No. You can pull the pan off and get to the rear cap. Once the pan is off take off the oil pump. Then remove the rear cap and pull the seal out of the cap. Push the other half in the block out carefully. When you get a new one it will have a little plastic shoe horn to slide in the new seal to the block. Then just put it all back together. You will have to drop the idler arm so the steering linkage will droop down in order to get the pan off.

Also, when you put the new one in, rotate it slightly so that the joint does not line up with the cap/block joint. Then put a tiny dab of RTV or gasket maker on the ends of the seal where the two halves meet.
