NOM Engine ???
I have a 1974 Coupe, with an NOM. I am trying to determine what specific motor I actually have (been researching this for a couple of months).
The motor, I believe has been machined, because the number on the front of the block is VK808200. The casting is 14016379 ( with a 1972 date stamp), and the heads are 3973487X.
Any ideas??? I'm not sure what year engine I should even buy parts for..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have checked the Mortec website, but there seems to be some inconsistancy with my heads and block. I am starting to think that a previous owner may have put LT-1 heads on a standard GM 350 block...

You have a 77-79 block with earlier heads.
VK808200 is a VIN number. Is there another set of numbers up there?

Those heads are one of the best chevy production heads made. I have set of 487's. There from 70-71. The block is 77-79, 2 or 4 bolt main.
What are the numbers on the passenger side pad on the front of the block?
Unreal...I just checked the #'s on mine again and have the same block and the heads are almost the same!

Those are decent heads but they used tha tcasting on standard 350s also. The ydid use it on LT1s but it does not mean thay came from an LT1. Decent heads anyway. Can't help on the block.

I was wrong.... The number stamped on the front pad is VK202800. Sorry, I was at work and posted from memory...
It is curious, although it has a casting number of 14016379, the date stamp is J 13 2, which would mean Oct. 13th, of 1962, 1972, or 1982. But the "Catalog of Chevy V-8 engine casting numbers 1955-93", shows the engine from the years 77-79, as does Mortec, Inc. website.
Seems the more I learn, the less I know.

The good thing about chevy small blocks is you don't really have to know much about them to get parts, everything can be determined visually. There is no guarantee that what was original to the "numbers" is still there, anyway, so you still have to check.
There are only two sizes of crank and rod bearings, two types of heads (three if you count vortecs), oil fill location either in the manifold or valve cover, either 2 or 4-bolt mains, and valve and piston sizes should be measured before buying anything. Then you have the one or two piece rear seal. [Nobody uses the no oil filter blocks except 55 chevy restorers, so you don't have to worry about them.]
