Default Radiator Clutch Fan Question

I've been trying to track down a vibration on my 81. Its only between 55 and 65 MPH. As soon as you let off the gas the vibration stops. I've changed the half shaft universals had the tires balanced and its still there. I was checking my vibration damper when I noticed there is about an 1/8" of play in my chutch fan. If I grab the fan at 9 and 3 o'clock and shake it I can feel it move. Is this normal or could this be my vibration? Its a 7 blade fan. Thanks for any help. :smash:

Hi Why dont ya just unbolt the fan, leaving on the pulley of course , and try that to see if it is the clutch. Are you any kin to Elijah Cooper from down near Newburgh ? Peace,,,,,,,,,Craig :seeya

Not normal for mine.

The cheap way to determine if that is the problem is to buy a cheap-o parts store replacement clutch and see if that cures it. Then if you are concerned with originality you can have the original restored (if original), or get a correct repro.

I have a centrifugal on mine now, which I really like. Instead of working on a thermostat, it just engages below 3000RPM. Above that it is off.

That vibration can also be caused by loose bell housing bolts. Only tales a few minutes to check.

Thanks for all the replys. I will check the bell housing and can I drive the car a few miles without the fan on it?
Mooseie982, there is an Elijah in Montgomery NY, but no relation. Montgomery is only 15 miles from New Paltz, NY. :seeya

Yes, you can drive a few miles without a fan. The fan really doesn't help anything until the thermostat opens anyway. In fact, if you drove fast enough at all times you would not need a fan. Too bad sitting in traffic is a fact of life. Even race cars have to idle back to the pits.

L79vette,
Thanks, I will remove the fan over the weekend and drive the car. Just need to get it up to 60 MPH to see if the vibration goes away. :seeya

Every time I have had a vibration problem that I couln't find it always turned out to be a tire/wheel balance problem. Computer balancers are terrible. Have the Tires spun balanced On the car. Not many places do it anymore but it is a far superior method of balancing.
