How do i tell what gears are in my 79?
I want to find out what gears i have in my 79, is there any way to do that without taking apart the diff.? Is there a code within the vin # that tells you what kind of gears there are? any help will be appreciated :thumbs:

here's the basics to start for a '79... I know it won't ask your question specifically.
L48: Auto - 3.55 4 spd - 3.36
L82: Auto - 3.55 4 spd - 3.70 & optional was 3.36

Try jacking up the rear and rotating the wheel one revalution and have a partner count the drive shaft rotations. It should rotate the number of turns equal to the gear ratio.
