Default 68-69 shifter boot question

Just got a big order from CC and just replaced all the outside lens/ markers and wow!
Going easy and quick till this.
Got the shifter boot for 68 4spd. and it has the steel frame impregnated in the rubber.
Not like these 70-82 leather ones

The frame is narrower than the shifter opening. My other Vettes it slipped down then up on the bottom outside of the shifter hole. This looks as to just fit snug in the opening. Corvette Anthrology CD pics show the shifter boot much lower so I either force it up around the opening or just bolt it in. Did I explain this adequitely?

Appears it comes from below but I cannot remove the shifter plate because the vent adjustment ***** are seized on the arms and won't come off so all I can do is pry up from one end.

Couple things wrong I need to figure out.
1. Cigerette lighter is INOP but orange wire is hot, bad ground?
2. Ashtray light fell off but when I put it back on and then cycle the ventilation ball the linkage hits the light and it falls off again.
3. The climate control bulb was burned out and lights up but when I push the bulb into the bottom of the control I cannot see the light shine thru? WTFO??!!
4. The rear fiber optic plastic holders for the RR tailbulb is broken off and WAS (Bubba duct tape) in position..

HELP ESPECIALLY HOW TO GET THOSE VENT ***** OFF WOULD HELP!

Dave, those "vent" ***** I believe take a very small allen set screw. I forget if they're on the inner sides or the back side. I'm sure it's on the side, but check. These set screws are small and hard to notice if you don't know they are there. The orange wire is indeed "hot" all the time so cigarettes can be lit with the car not runing.

God I feel stupid.

Any ideas why the climate control light bulb doesn't work (2 wires going to it) when it's disconnected from the climate control it lights but when I push it into the bottom of the unit it goes out or you cannot see it light up the climate control panel?

The climate control light is very dim. Even at night it's hard to see (at least on my car). I got the leather shift boot for my 69, but I had a rubber one too (sent to me by mistake), and the metal ring part looks the same. The metal part is actually easily bendable with your fingers, and you can make it conform to the shape of the shift boot flange. The metal ring on my boot was not tapped for screws either, but it was so soft, I put the screws in by just pushing on them with a screwdriver and they tapped themselves.
