Default Automatic shift ****

Once again I need some noob advice on the Vette, I am trying to get the center console plate off to fix the AC controls and I cant get the shift **** off! It unscrews until the handle is flush with the button then it wont go any further, how do I get it all the way off?
Thanks
Dan

Unscrew the button first? That is how my '79 is.

we tried that, if that is the way it works it must be on pretty tight! I'll see if I can give it another try when I go home
Thanks

I'm having trouble with mine too. The button turns, but I hear a spring like noise as I turn it, and it doesn't come off. I'm wandering if I need to grab something at the bottom of the shifter (whatever is turning with the button).
Anyone else encounter this?

The chrome button has to be taken off first.....I had to use channel locks with rubber padding on the teeth....it must have been loctited or something. After that the ball just unscrews...voila!
