68 L-71 performace stats? and Dyno RWHP?
Hi,
Does anybody have any real world performance specs on the 68 L-71 427ci 435HP convertible?
Also, has anybody had a standard 435hp L-71 on a Dyno to see what HP is at the rear wheels?
I know that they are rated at 435hp, however i heard that this was conservative.
Any info i can get would be great.
Thanks

Re: 68 L-71 performace stats? and Dyno RWHP? (427ozVette)
I saw an article in one of the magazines a year or two ago and they chassis dynoed a stock 67 427-435 car and it made 290 hp at the wheels. A stock one should run around 105mph in the quarter mile. However with all the usual mods like headers and such it is pretty easy to up that output easily. Bill.

You also have to keep in mind this is GROSS power figures. Once you add alternator, power steering, A/C compressor, etc the power goes down dramaticly.

Bill and Corey are right on the money. 290rwhp is probably being generous in some cases. The one that was underrated was the L88...rated at only 430 GROSS HP, but in reality was ~575+.
But it is easy to make them faster. :)

Thanks for the info guys.
I'm still waiting for my car to turn up as i'm just having it shipped.
What are the normal mods people are doing to them to get better than stock performance? Any simple yet effective ideas?
Mine is a geniune Tripower and is pretty much stock. Original manifolds and etc.
What are some good brand of headers and etc that I could put on it?
Does adding say 3" side exhaust along with some decent headers add much more HP?
Thanks again guys for your advice.

Headers would be the first mod I'd do.
A more radical cam will also wake her up. The heads, intake and carbs flow well, you just need a cam and some headers so she can breathe.

I'm with Cory. Slap some headers and good mufflers on it and let it fly. Oh and we want to see pics when you get it. Good luck with the car. Bill.

Thanks,
Any idea of what size exhaust would be suited?
Straight through mufflers?
header size?
pipe size?
I've heard people talking about 'H' pipes and etc. Does this make a difference?
I'll post a couple of pics I've already got of it.

Sorry guys, just worked out the picture part. I had a 150 point inspection done on it, and the best they could come up with was a tear on the drivers seat on the stitch line. My father is a upholsterer, so shouldn't be a problem, and a small paint chip on the front edge of the hood.

I don't know if you want to keep it original or not. Since it doesn't look like it was a side-pipes car, you may not want to add them, but the Hooker side-mounted headers/pipes with JCL baffles are a tough combo to beat. They look and sound good (loud), and they also help alleviate all the heat under the footwells. :)
FWIW, locally a '68 with a tri-power 454 (was originally a 427) with the tri-power intact, stock manifolds and the original points distributor (read: tough to tune) made 290rwhp/350rwtq on a chassis dyno.

Re: 68 L-71 performace stats? and Dyno RWHP? (WA 2 FST)
Thanks....Any idea what a setup like this would cost? any links to pics with this setup?
If i decided to take these pipes off the car and return it back to original, it shouldn't leave any traces of side pipes on the car......should it?
It is original apart from the colour. It was originally Bronze.
