Re: rear end movement (trackdogg)
It's hard to tell by just pulling on the wheel as there will be some movement. The key is to look at the yoke itself and see it's movement. A good setup shouldn't move much at all in and out. Some say 1/8th inch is too much. A rebuilt setup has virtually no movement, you'd have to measure it with an indicator. At least mine did.

Do you mean up and down, like grasping the whole wheel and lifting it up and down, or do you mean you just shake the tire itself and it has some play in it?

Re: rear end movement (Jasonty)
While the rear is jacked up. try pushing the top of the tire in and out. Also try the same to the bottom. Put some muscle behind it. Have someone watch the side yokes while you do this. There should be very little movement if any in the sideyokes. Pushing the tires in the 3 and 9 positions will tell if there is any wear in the wheel bushings. You should also check those.

I agree, movement is created by clerance of yoke to diffenrential cross shaft. The cross shaft could also be worn, Tom's Differentials has a better quality replacement than the Eaton or GM service part. I would not accept more than 1/8-1/4" of play in a HP Vette, for a street crusier you can go to 1/2-3/4" of side yoke play BUT, don't plan on autocrossing one with that much play!
