Default worm gear Q

In the steering box overhaul notes, it says several times 'to not let the ball nut run to the end of the gear' or damage to the ball guides can occur.

Is this because the ball groove on the shaft tapers out as it blends into the shaft at each end? So running the nut to the end will wedge the ***** and then I assume the weak point is designed to be the ball guide tubes??

If so, how forgiving are they? The notes make it sound very fragile, but I think I may have inadvertently done this. How can I tell if the ball guides are ok?

TJ take the guides off and look at them. If they appear ok then assemble the worm nut, ball screw, and ***** and see how it works from end to end. You'll most likely be OK.
