Default For those of you with 3 speeds...

When you're running 60 mph, what are taching? The vette I just picked up is up around 2500rpm at 60mph. Just wondering if this is exceptionally high. Wondering if this car is geared real low. I don't know the ratio.

Hmm I guess mine is around 3500 rpm at 60 mph, but I believe my tach is really messed up, at least I hope so!! From what I've seen 2500 doesn't seem to bad at 60, but I could be wrong.

By three-speed I assume you mean automatic since the manual was discontinued in '69. If your tires are close to stock diameter then that comes out to a 3.08 rear. But without knowing the tire, it's impossible to say absolutely.

Probably because at 60 mph he assumed that the car was in top gear. In top gear (with original transmissions) the ratio is 1:1 regardless of whether the tranny is 3 or 4 speed, so all Vettes could be compared.

IMO, 2500rpm would put the car at about 120 at 5000rpm, which is about right for top speed... :yesnod:

Actually no, they can't be directly compared. Auto's have some slip in the convertor.

I run 3400 at 80mph, with what should be a 3.08 rear. Your numbers sound close, but I don't drive those speeds very often so I can't be sure.

Not exceptionally high. You're just not used to it because modern vehicles have overdrive transmissions...something GM didn't start installing in Vettes until 1982. Be thankful you don't have a 3.55 rear end, or you'd already be shopping for an OD tranny to swap in there (ask me how I know...)

I tach about the same at 60; '78 Pace Car. I am so used to today's ovedrive trannys that it always sound strange to wind that high.

about 2500 on my 74' 3 speed auto, as well. :)

I drive it with pretty good care, and that's about typical cruising speed around the freeways.

My Fiero tachs at about the same RPM for 60MPH. That's how I remembered. :)

The Chevy small blocks were happier than most at high revs. I remember in the '70s I'd cruise all day at 75 - 85 (before the double nickel) and that engine would just sing along at 3 - 4 grand. Hey, gas was 35 cents a gallon and you could fill up for 5 bucks!

With my 71 with a 3.08, mine runs right at 2400-2500 at 60 :)
when I first got in though, I thought it was stuck in 2nd!
The ease at which new OD trannys get you down the road really is nice and habit forming. :auto:
