Default LeMans Style Gas Cap (Rolling Thunder)

Dave has not been around for a couple of months, but I have always been instersted in this mod and wonder how difficult it might be?
http://davesrollingthunder.com/rt/ro...cap/gascap.htm

Has anyone else done this? Just wonder if someone with limited ability can actually do it? :)

I believe Jughead Len has done this same thing to his car. Maybe he will chime in on this one for you .

Very dfficult. :D Dave & I worked together on that little project. Text from my page sums it up:

I had some rough drawings of the adapter which is needed for the LeMan's filler to mate to a Corvette tank. Rolling Thunder used these simple drawings, transcribed them to Excel and drew up actual machine shop blueprints to have the flange fabricated from aluminum stock! The problem is actually more complex than it appears. We wanted an adapter which would bolt directly to the stock gas tank. The problem being, a lot of C-3 tanks are different. On some tanks the flange area is flat, and on others the tank flange sits at a 15 degree angle! Add to that the fact that the cap should be installed paralell with the deck and you've got problems.

Dave is the man. If you know a machine shop that can mill or fabricate the custom flange then you're in. Mine is made from a solid piece of aluminum and Dave had his made from brass. Once you get the flange made, you'll need to drill perpendicular holes in the base to match the tank. Sounded easier to me than it was.

Shortly after completing this project Dave became ill and hasn't had the same indurance since.

It's definitely not a wrencher do it yourself with a pair of pliers job. If Dave hadn't picked up the ball on this one, my LeMan's filler would still be sitting on my garage shelf. :yesnod:

We got the cap here though: http://www.cobraaccessories.com

I have one for mine.
Mine technically is not functional (by that I mean I still have the factory gas cap underneth)
The way mine works is that there is a bracket underneath that attaches to the same 4 mounting holes that the factory gas cap ring mounts to.
My hands just reach through the 3" opening so I can open the factory cap and fill up.
Plus I can easily remove it and put the original back on if I so wish.

cheers

Jughead,
any chance you still have the shop drawings? I'd like to install the LM cap on my 71 Vert.

Good Morning guys. I got an email from Len this morning and it made me check the forum. The drawings (if you can call them that) are at the corvettefaq site. I'd be more than happy to help and answer any questions if I can.

This seems a lot more simpler than going the machine shop route. So, where did you get the cap and bracket?

OHSIXX, Got that LeMans cap on my '73 from MOONEYES. Mine works the same way "for now". It's basicly for show. Pop open the LeMans cap and reach in and open the factory cap on the tank. I "personally" don't like "fake" stuff on my car. The mid-year Vettes have a neck like that on the coupes coming up from the the gas tanks. Just got one from L.I. Corvettes. Getting a new gas tank (mine is originale, might as well it change now) and going to make it truly functional. That is a real nice set-up Dave made, the problem I have with that, on my car the fiberglass where the factory chrome ring was isn't that nice so I wouldn't want that to show.

Okay I found this on MOONEYES, but how does it attach to the four stock holes?

OK, it was not as simple as buying the brackets, the cap and screwing it on, you do need to "manufacture" the bracket and the trim ring, but you dont need any fancy tools, I used a jigsaw, two files and some sandpaper (and 4 or 5 hours of your time)
That mooneyes cap is expensive, I bought my Monza cap with collar for $98, the scrap aluminum for the bracket and trim ring was $25 and the welder charged me $10 for tacking the bracket to the collar.

I can give you a run down of everything I did..and I am trying to find the URL of the Cobra kit car parts retailer I bought the cap from as well.

Let me know,
Nick
