L-81 VS 350Z HELP!!
Ok, i need some help, a kid at school got a new 350Z, and theirs no way ill let that *** POS beat my vett. The 350 runs a 14.1 on the quarter, so heres what im thinking new gears, new heads, maybe a charger (worried about hood clearence) and maybe a 50 or 75 shot of the funny gas, im thinking this will get me well into the 13, but what gears, heads, charger, and N20 system should i go with?

A 50 shot on a V8 isn't really worth the hassle. That engine, if built properly should handle a 100 Shot without serious upgrades. I think that edelbrock recommends forged internals for anything over 150.
As far as trying to beat everything japanese, good luck. I'd say forget that and just think about how much sexier a C3 is than anything made over in Japan.

See if you can get a few of those hamsters to work overtime... :jester
There will always be someone faster, that said: it all depends on your budget.
Why not just start building another motor so you can drive it while the beast is in progress? Why not a crate motor?
Good Luck!

The 350Z's aren't all that fast, they will smoke a stock C3 L48/L82 but I know personally they won't smoke a L48 done up right
Do they math and they are 270 flywheel horsepower at approximatly 3200lbs so maybe 200RWHP and close to same weight as the Vette, it doesn't take too much to get more than 200RWHP out of a C3 and you stomp all over the ricer, at the track :D

The thought of a H/S kid with a new Z makes me nauseous! :U
I wouldn't want to lower myself by lining up next to that spoiled brat - and I have nothing against the car except I almost mistook one for a Porsche, didn't realize how much they copied the styling.
How much money do you have to spend on mods? Isn't the L-81 the 305 California engine? Pretty enemic (I meant "anemic" like anemia, not like enima! ) as I recall. Also, are you at altitude? Where were you planning on racing? I really wouldn't bother! :)

Re: L-81 VS 350Z HELP!! (PRND21)
Well im a highschool kid with a vett lol, but i worked for every penny that i spent on that car, his daddy gave him his, which brings up kinda a long story, they own an animal refuge that cost them virtually nothing to run, but the government gives them big bucks and they get a crap load of tax free donations, thats why the kid also has a brand new suzuki 1300 haybusa (worlds fastes production bike) just what a 16 year old needs right? anyways the third day he got his license he caused me and a lady to get an a accident with that dam 350 of his, luckily i was in my dodge pickup not my fiberglass cofin!! He slamed on his breaks doing 75 and dodged oncoming trafic to make a turn without his blinker, and i couldnt stop as fast as a 350 in a 86 dodge pickup, so i slamed in the back of a F-350 that was behind the 350, 95%of the time if you rearend someone you get a ticket, i didnt he got a carless driving, then when we went to pickup my pickup and tow it home they were out their screwing with it (the kid and his dad) he started shoving me around and the cops came again to give him a harrasment ticket, so basiclly i want the faster car lol, not just because of that but im into going to the strip to, and somebody asked if i was at elevation...Colorado 5400 ft up.

Forget it. Take a deep breath. :chill:
When I was in high school (back in the '70s) I drove a Volkswagen Super Beetle while all the other kids were driving "muscle cars." I had the advantage of handling (really!) while they were obsessed with the 1/4 mile. Now I have a Corvette (and a '60s Mustang) while all the kids drive import tuners. Go figure.
You're only going to kill yourself trying to keep up with idiots like that. And some of my classmates died at 120 mph, so I ain't blowin' smoke.
Life has many paths. Choose yours and ignore the idiots along the way. :yesnod:

If your smart you'll just sit back and watch how much fun that family is gonna have with a 16 year old kid, a 350Z and the world's fastest motorcycle, if you get my drift.

Id say that you should either get new heads, some nice aluminum ones, edelbrock or if you can afford some nice pro1 heads, if you cant afford a set of new heads, just rebuild your valve train and put in a wild cam, that should get you past 200hp EASY, also i wouldnt bother with the NOS, or the supercharger, for the money you'll spend on that you can get a set of REALLY nice heads, which should help get you in the 300hp range, plus if youre trying to beat a japanese car, dont use the same cheap stuff they use, win em over with youre engine, not a cheap susbstitute. my .02, hope this helps, and KICK THAT GUYS A**
by the way.... i dont believe in endangering lives, so go to some deserted part of town where you know FOR SURE that no innocent bystanders could get hurt, i belive in having fun but staying safe.......(yeah, it sounds cheesy, but ive had a few friends in REALLY BAD WRECKS)

Just forget about the kid with the 350z, just be content that your car looks far better than his and also that his car will lose thousands of dollars over the next few years and yours will rise!!!

Hell- I would be confident to take out a 350Z with a pair of aluminum heads, mild cam, exhaust manifolds and true duals. That should put the vette at around 300 hp.
Of course, I fully intend to run a CERTAIN SIZED MOTOR(c'est un surprise), headers, AFR195s, and a moderate cam... just so there's no question how badly a car like that would get its butt kicked!

I am going to go out on a limb here and say get nitrous if you want, it is the best bang for the buck. I think you can use up to a 100 shot on a stock engine. Don't go above that.
Now, saying that, it's not what I or (as you can see) anyone here recommends, but it is the cheapest route. As an alternative - If you have the cam that you are going to install and the intake and carb you need some cheap heads like the L98 aluminum or vortec heads and make sure the chamber size is such that you increase compression a point or two, a performance distributor that doesn't give out at 4,500 RPM, and if you don't have it already change that '81 single exhaust to a real dual exhaust (not the '81 "fake" dual exhaust).
Yeah yeah, your going to have a bunch of older guys here saying "don't modify it, save your money, your going to hurt yourself...". My opinion? Modify your vette and kick the Z's butt!

350z's stock run around 14.1
My Corvette, see mods in signature only ran a 14.2
And someone said the old 300ZX were fast, the N/A ones ran like a 15..the Turbo ones were a little faster.

I'm not an expert on this stuff or anything but i would be willing to bet that with some 3.73s or 3.55s you could run a high 13 and maybe a low 13 with slicks.
I'm sure my gears caused me to run so slow.
