Default Themostat housing questions

Having successfully warped my thermo housing, what replacement housing do you recommend?

The stock one, or an o-ringed model such as the chrome ones Mr. Gaasket sells. The chrome looks cheezy, but if it seals better I would probably use it.

For that matter, does anyone make an aluminum housing for use with an aluminum manifold?

Does anybody make a proper, cast-iron thermostat housing that's properly angled for the C3 WITHOUT the threaded hole on top for the TV switch?

After struggling with leak after leak due to warpage, I threw the chromed alum/gasket one I had as far as I could. I got a cast iron one (without the threaded hole on top) from the local auto parts store and have not had a leak since. This was before the o-ring type became common. They may be the answer if you want the chrome look. Charles

It's easy to fix a leaking themostat housing. Take a piece of emery paper, a 8 x 11 inch sheets works great, using masking tape to tape the sheet to any flat surface then start drawing the thermostat housing across the emery paper, in one direction only. Don't start rocking it back and forth.
Place the housing flat on the emery paper and slowly draw it towards you pushing down and keeping it as flat as possible.
Keep looking at your work and you will see the high spots being ground off and the low spots slowly disappear.
Take your time and in a few minutes you will have a flat housing that seals.
I prefer the O ring housing but even they need flattening.

Actually that was what I would do, but eventually it would start to leak again. Charles

Go to a auto parts store and they can show you photos of them in their catalog.

Actually, I didn't want the chrome look. I like things as stock-appearing as possible. Actually, Norval, would a sanding block work for flattening the thermo housing?

Norval, everyone - thanks for the advice. Don't mean to forget everyone's names.

Here's a GM part# for an unpolished aluminum T-stat housing - #10108470. No O-ring . It's the same piece that comes on the ZZ4 crate motors. Bought mine from GMpartsdirect for <$5 (a supporting vendor). ;)
