Re-coat Hooker Competition Headers, buy new, or leave them alone?
My vette came with Hooker competition headers and the ceramic coating on them has flaked off. I have a feeling the previous owner broke in the motor with them on. Something Holley says not to do. They want to charge $275 to have them recoated. New ceramic coated headers are $330. Can you tell me if I have other options? Are they other coatings out there or high temp paint to help with the aesthetics? What if I leave it the way it is?

Check around locally. We have a guy who ceramic coats headers for $100, and guarantees the coating as long as you own the car.
I went with VHT high temp paint, and had the local coating guy blast, paint, and bake. VHT says the paint will last 5-10 years if properly baked. Wanted something a little different. No matter what you'll have to have the old stuff blasted off.
Depends on how much moisture your car sees as to how quickly the headers will rust. If you want to just patch things up, I had some coating on my manifolds called "Hot Stuff" that came in a little red plastic container. You just apply it with a brush. Would probably protect against rust until you can get the job done properly later. It was a silvery finish, with a sort of rough texture. Never burned off the manifolds.

I got a set of headers ceramic coated for $100 a couple of years ago. I have my Hooker Sidepipes at the ceramic coater right now. $300 for the headers and sidepipes. Not bad.

The coatings Hooker uses are junk. I love their headers, but I stripped the set I put on the BOSS and re-coated with VHT header paint, then baked 'em in a buddy's industrial oven. I've used the same paint and just run 'em with good results. Kind of a charcoal grey finish after a while.

 $300
for another $30, you can buy yourself a new set of headers from Hooker.

That's all I'm using from now is VHT header paint, the ceramic coating looks fantanstic when it is first done but within a year it dosen't look any better than a 6 dollar can of paint job :D

If someone can coat side headers & pipes for $300 and guarantee them for life, I think that's an excellent deal. I paid $900 for my headers & sidepipes. If they look like poopiee in a year, I'd more than happily shell out $300 to have them look good forever. :yesnod:

Also try Airborne Coatings. They coat parts for all of the NASCAR teams around here and may have a location near you and their guarantee on used parts is better than JetHot's.

The POR-15 guys have a high temp paint also. Good up to 1400 degrees, the POR-20 is a silver aluminum color.

I painted my headers with high temp paint about 20 years ago and they still look pretty good. I might sand blast them and try the POR stuff.
