Got $1,000!! Whats best cam/carb/manifold combo for L48
Tried to get Lars to rebuild my failing Q-Jet, but he is dedicating his time to racing until the fall. Talked mama into letting me have another $1k for the top end. (Pretty lucky since I just spent nearly $3k on complete suspension and rear dif rebuild. Guess I'll keep her around for while longer.)
Anyway here is what I have picked out: ( I already have Dynomax ceramic headers installed, see sig)
Edelbrock cam: .420 .442 204' 214' $120
Edelbrock Performer EPS manifold $200
Barry Grant 625 cfm Road Demon Vac/Elect $340
Misc hoses, gaskets, and pump $150
--------------------------------------------------------------------
$810
I am looking for opinions on the best gains I can get with these items. Please spec out any better combo's you have found in this price range. I don't have the money for a set of good heads yet. This is just to tie me over for a year or so, then I can save for what I really want. :smiliedrool:

What exactly are you trying to do with it? Those are all good parts and you should see a nice gain from stock, but you have $190 left... :jester

I just looked at your sig pics-very nice ride. If you don't want to spend the money for the heads yet, you can get the parts you have in mind-which sounds like a nice package- and then port your stock heads.

Great choice for carb and intake. Another carb to look at would be a Holley street avenger.
Now for a camshaft I would go with an Iskenderian
262-SUPERCAM HYDRAULIC Low/Mid-Range performance cam. 9.5
1 compr. 3.08-3.70 axle ratio. Passenger cars & trucks. Up to 625 CFM Carb. RPM-Range
2000-5500 Valve Lift - INT
.435 EXT
.435 Valve Lash Hot - INT
.000 EXT
.000 ADV Duration - INT
262° EXT
262° .050 Duration - INT
208° EXT
208° Lobe Center
108°
:yesnod:

..
You need to give trans. & rear gears for cam. More cam rec., even if a stock auto.

Dart Iron Eagle heads $600
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...DRT%2D10120010
Summit Cam 214/224 .442 .465 $80
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...K1103&view=128
Weiand Stealth intake $145
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=WND%2D8016
Road Demon Carb $340
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...PT%2D4402020VE
Gasket Set $30
[URL]http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2DG2600[URL]
About $1,200 but the extra $200 will add a set of good heads that will increase your comp ration and flow much better. Spend the $200 and still be able to step up to a larger cam in future if you want.

Fevre, those are bare castings for $600 arent they? Add another $300 for finished bolt on heads.

You are right, my bad. :bb Guess it ain't so cheap now. Could go with a vortec head/intake combo, think those are about $700 but that limits your intake choice in the future and also cam selection. The vortecs are good to about 400 hp but I would not use them unless I was going to settle on a eng combo and make no future changes.
One other options is alum L98 vette heads, 58cc comb chamber and decent flow numbers, can be had for about $400 used.

Bump cam up to Comp Cams XE-256 or similiar (212/218 @ .050 110LS).
Should I replace the spring while I'm in there?
What kind of total power gains should I expect??
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I never had the opportunity to get edumucated on engine building. (But I can show you the fastest ways to turn and mill metal :jester )

Re: Got $1,000!! Whats best cam/carb/manifold combo for L48 (c3-4me)
K how about this combo some vortec heads 170 cc intakes at about 400 bucks, head gasket set 60 bucks. A Performer RPM 150 bucks, and a 270 cam w/lifters 150 bucks. And still lacking a few bucks for a carb but even with the Q-jet it should give you some good bangs for the buck. The pro's are increased compression, better flow, 270 to 300 hp i would gues and it would be a gues. Also some room to grow when you get tired while your saving for the big project. Such as Carb, Rockers, Ign. and so on, and on,and on. :chevy
