How do I repair a loose outside chrome mirror?
Is there some way to fix the problem of a loose outside mirror? Can the glass be removed without breaking it? Can this apparent design flaw be overcome?

Good question. I use a product called Screwdriver Helper. It is an abrasive liquid that is used for gripping screws. I put it on the ball joint of the mirror and it helps it stay in place. However, this is just a temporary fix and I have not pursued it any further. I'm curious to see what gets posted.

Does anyone know how to remove the glass? Will soaking it in laquer thinner melt the glue and release the glass? I have head this works, but has anyone tried it? I also remember reading about a way to make the ball/socket joint tighter, but I can't recall how!

You will really have to be more specific as to what your problem is. Why do you wish to remove the glass? And I would not bring lacquer thinner within 100 yards of a Corvette. It is a very aggressive solvent.

I think he is talking about the actual mirror. Mine is loose too. I am constantly adjusting it.

Okay, here goes nothing! I removed the mirror from the car, and it is going to soak in laquer thinner overnight to see if the glass will come free....then I can see how these things were put together, and if I can re-engineer it!

if your talking about the ''ball '' that the mirror mounts to ,, you cant tighten it . once it gets sloppy its shot- i went thru the same thing and tried to get it to snug it up, and ended up buying a new mirror-that was 3 yrs ago and i can tell that the new one is starting to get loose , but not to the point it needs to be changed- i think there just cheap pieces of s--t we have to pay a lot for!------carl============

I have replaced the mirrors 4 times in the last 18 years ive tryed loctite but when i put the cover on or just bump the mirror its loose again.i cut grooves in the ball and tryed to get it to rust tight but that didnt work . replacing mirrors is not the answer. Whoever has a good solution will be a hero for sure.

My problem is the mirror base mounting to the mounting bracket. Too much clearance between the two, so the whole mirror wobbles. I need to remove and shim I guess.

I use normal green Loctite. I run it into the ball, set the mirror where I want it and let it sit overnight. I tightens the mirror up but still allows adjustments. It needs doing every couple of years but seems to work fine.

I think that something needs to be done inside the door?
Or
Could you perhaps put something like "JB Weld" into the screw hole to fill it up. let it dry and then screw the mirror back on?
Drill it with a small drill bit so that the screw will bite?

Someone once mentioned that they used some clear caulking on the ball and then positioned the mirror in place.
