Trick to waxing/ polishing
I've tried this with 4 brands of wax and with both mothers and Eagle One aluminum poilsh. Apply wax/ polish as normal and allow the car to sit all night and remove following day (keep in my all my 3 cars are garaged). The shine is double what it normally would be and the residue coming off the terry cloth towel is 1/4th normal. Meaning to me that the wax/ polish is adheased to the car and not on the towel. I tried this last evening to the rally rims and they look like chrome. Normally we remove the wax after an hour or when it hazes. most if not all of the wax/ polish ends up on the towel. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Good tip and I may try it soon. Right now I am using Zaino Z5 and usually leave it on about an hour or so. It is not a wax.
I have put on two coats this weekend and it looks really good. I can see my reflection in the paint. :)

Try this. One spot w/ Zaino put on the day before the other with Zaino just put on 1-hour, wipe both. See which is shinier and which leaves more residue on the towel.

I routinely do that with Zaino  I started doing it because there was a fair amount of "controversy" concerning how long it took zaino to dry and how screwed up it got if you tried wiping it off before dry. So, I just let it dry overnight to be sure and kept doing it that way. :)

Got any tips on how to get dark color out of my aluminum valve covers? They are not too bad, just noticable to me.

not necessarily. i've sucessfully tried this on both painted and aluminum surfaces.

I am always worried about leaving it on too long, I heard somewhere years ago that if you left the polish on for too long that it will damage the paintwork. I guess this was just a myth, I will try and leave it on and then see what it looks like on my black paint, your black paint sure looks good

Re: Trick to waxing/ polishing (Pauld)
Granted if you have an oxidized paint job or orange peel and leave it on for a month while visiting death valley at 115 degrees the wax will harden and never come off. Other than that you'll be fine.

Wash car, dry properly.
Mothers Carnuba Cleaner wax applied....left over night and and cleaned
of using back and forth motion only (otherwise swirl marks left)
Now use Mothers Ultimate wax Phase 3 ....dab on and wipe off right away.
You will be amazed, delighted and excited to go and drive down main street....

I was just going to add this too. You can put it on in circles but it must come off in straight lines

Re: Trick to waxing/ polishing (Cali,68,L-79)
My only waxing advice is:
Clay bar
4-5 coats of Zaino. I put in on and strip it an hour later. It has an awesonme shine. I just had another person ask how many coats of clear and didn't believe me when I said none.
I buff it with lambs wool after the final coat.
Zaino is the best shine I have ever had on a car.

Re: Trick to waxing/ polishing (Mike Smith)
Based on this thread I did something different. I put on Zanio second coat (no accelerator) and left it on the car for 24 hours. Interesting thing is is my garage had the zanio smell real strong for at least 5 hours after I finished...
Then after 24 hours I wiped it off. It was a little more difficult to get off and less came off.
And the shine is much much deeper
I agree, leaving Z2 on for longer is better
