Default Windshield Frame ROT!!!

Well, I pulled (smashed into little pieces :smash:) the windshield to check out my windshield frame situation. It's quite a bit worse than I had origionally thought. The entire frame needs to be replaced. The sides of the lower frame even have a good bit of rot so the front clip may need to come off. This is not what I was hoping for at all. Luckily the brother-in-law of the owner of the local corvette shop that closed down a few years ago lives next door. He saw the vette, came over to take a look, and told me what I need to do about the frame. He may even buy the motor I pulled out of the vette.

Time to go get a few beers and mourn the new found rust.

Bob,

Sorry to hear about the w/shield frame. How is the birdcage underneath the windshield (body mount #2)?

I had the w/shield frame fixed when I first purchased the car. The guy did a great job. When I picked the car up, the resto shop owner told me that I also had frame rot. It's been sitting while I finish the '72.

Good Luck!

 I have the same problem! :( I recently pulled off the windshield because i decided I was going to replace it (just looked horribly cut and unsafe) and what was under the surface looks much like yours.

In fact I was calling the body shop tomorrow to see how much it could cost. Do you have any idea or have you gotten a quote? Any help would be appreciated, and I'll pass on any info to you as well. I've also heard of filling it with lead but I think I'm going to replace it. #1 on the top ten lists of unexpected "fund deviations" :cry

Well, Just the metal bits from Zip are going to total $600 w/o shipping. Header, 2 a-pillars, 2 upper corners. I REALLY should do the lower corners as well, but I'll have to remove the front clip to get to them properly! :banghead: On top of all of this, I'd have to get a welding setup and some metal to practice on. (Anyone in Northern Colorado wanna teach me? :D) I'm going to investigate just how far south this rust goes down and will probably decide how to proceed from there. There's also a place America's Finest Corvettes that sells sandblasted/painted used windshield frames in the $250-$375 range that may be the way to go. In the end I may just take it to a body shop. Anyone else gone through this that can give some advice?

Cover it up, it's hurting my eyes..... :cry Bob, that has got to suck. Mine is rotting, but I'm afraid to look. I'm going to have to replace the windshield in a few weeks and that is what I'm afraid of. :( good luck.

I have a set of new corners I didn't use if anyone is interested in them. I'll sell them for what I paid + UPS cost. I ended up cutting out the rust and welding in new .040 sheet metal and grinding flat. worke dout pretty good.

That was the original inspiration for me doing all of this, the windshield leaked a bit in heavy rain, and I had a feeling there was a bit of rust up there. Hopefully you won't have anything close to my disaster.

I got a complete frame on ebay for 150$, and its solid as rock. you can contact the vendor with his nic name on ebay:txvetteparts. He works out in texas, and last time I checked he regularly lists frames up for auction. :steering:

Hello,

Same story happer ending. I pulled my windsheild today and was able not to break it! I have some holes in the driver's side top. I am planing to braze it in with brass. This will never rust! After that, POR-15 the rest of it. I am with you brother, I was expecting the worst and turn out not too bad.
