Default How to sound like a Mustang?

YES, I am a Chevy guy, but damn, those Mustangs sure have a nice Throaty Rumble. How are they getting that tone? Is it the mufflers alone, X-pipe, Y-pipe, combination of many things???

I hate to start a new "muffler" thread, but not at all happy with the Dynomax's I installed w/ an H-pipe and wondered what to do to sound more "throaty".

My current set-up: '76 (w/ '95 LT1), 1-5/8" headers, 2-1/2" dual exhaust w/ H-pipe.

Goal: To have a noticeable low-note rumble, but not have insane interior resonance. Am I living in "Fantasyland"?

Thanks!

Fords sound the way they do mostly because of their firing order. I have to admit I've heard quite a few great sounding OHV and DOHC Stangs. All it takes is a nice set of flowmaster and an x-pipe. But 9 out of 10 that's all it is is sound, bark is worse than it's bite. That's not to say they aren't any fast Stangs, hell they are everywhere.

A nice lopey cam and a good set of mufflers will sound every bit as good if not better than your local Ford. :yesnod:

I've got a '91 Stang 5.0 GT too and always like the exhaust note too. That is until I installed shorty headers, BBK H-pipe and a Flowmaster "American Thunder" exhaust. Now it REALLY sounds awesome. :yesnod: For a Stang that is. So I'd say if that's the type of sound you're looking for then checkout the guys who are running the different Flowmasters.

The factory mufflers on the Mustang are actually a little small, that may have something to do with the sound.

I low the sound too and have flow masters on the mustang. We can not get that sound because we do not run tail pipes. The flow masters are quiet on the mustang due to the tailpipes. On my vet it would be way too loud.

Hmmmm, since I no longer have anything close to a stock set-up (see sig for mods) maybe I can install a set of FlowMasters close to the headers and run some tailpipe? (I'm using a different tranny crossmember that allows the exhaust to shoot straight out the back w/o going thru those "cutouts" in the original crossmember)

Now for another burning question...What Series of Flowmasters - 40, 50, 60, 70? Not too loud in the car, but "noticeable" to those around me.

Thanks again!

Doesn't the resonator on the mustang have a big part in the rumble??
At least that is what one 'stang owner told me in high school.

I often wondered about that. Now I know!

Since you are running an LT1, you might want to post in the C4 section to see what those guys are doing to sound more throaty.

What mufflers are you running? Super Turbos or Ultra Flos? The UFs sound a lot better than the Super Turbos...

5.0 Mustangs have a really really long tailpipe, and as Flowmasters are very popular combined with different firing order make for distinct and pretty cool sound.

hey, i agree. i hate to say it but some of those 5.0 and 4.6 mustangs sound just awsome. i don't necessarily agree that it's the flowmasters that do it though. i've heard mustangs with flowmasters and chevys with flowmasters and there isn't a huge difference. it's the 'stangs with borlas that have an orgasmic sound.
BTW, i don't buy that it's the firing order that does it either. all eight cylinders are firing and dumping into two pipes, regardless of chevy or ford design. i think it's more a function of cylinder head and exhaust port shape/configuration. but i am probably wrong...
oh yeah, jim is right. vipers sound like absolute poopie considering it's 8 liters. i've heard rice burners that sound better than that. i'd be seriously disappointed if i spend 85k on a 500hp car that sounded like some kids civic with a coffee can!

From what I've seen if you install a cam with longer duration, higher lift
and shorter centerline (107 degrees).....you will :smiliedrool: :smiliedrool:

Longer centerline gives smooth idle and shorter centerline gives lopey idle.
....my experience :chevy

Combine with some cubes... :smiliedrool: :smiliedrool: :smiliedrool: :smiliedrool: :D

The 40 series Flowmasters are the louder ones. Tailpipes make a difference too. I have the 40's on both my truck and my vette. The truck has tailpipes and the vette does not. The vette is noticably louder. The 40's are also shorter in length which allow more room for various mounting positions and angles.

i had Flowmasters on mine and HATED the sound!
ripped them off and gave them away to a friend with a p/u truck...
they sound great on it!
i too think its because we have little to no tailpipe and they need some pipe behind them in order to sound good...
just my 2 cents worth...

I also think lower compression sounds a little better. Highier compression motors sound great at idle, but through the mid range gargle. Are burp. Once they get in the high end they sound like a Pro Stock car. Lower compression motors just seem to be mellow though the rpm band.

I also agree that the vettes muffler location is not the best for sound. By the time the sound wave gets to the muffler it breaks apart and distorts. My old motor with open chamber mufflers actually made "ting, ting" sounds at idle. Its was like you could hear and feel every compression stroke. Once it rev'ed to 2000 rpm it was horrible and after 3000 rpm it sounded like John Forces car.

My point is it hard to find the right combination that will sound right through the whole rpm band. That's probably why the Mustangs don't sound great at high rpms.

I had Flowmaster's 40 Series as well. There is a huge difference over stock mufflers at idle. When you step on the loud pedal.... HOLY COW! At highway speeds, it is almost too loud.... It is possible for an Chevy Corvette to be too loud? In my case... yes. I gave them to my brother to put on his 70' Barracuda. I now have Super Turbos and they sound deep and somewhat throaty. Did not get the highway test completed yet.... SOON ....
