What should I drive to the cruise-in?
Ok, I know I'm asking this in the C3 section, so I'm expecting to see everyone answer, "Drive the C3", but I'm going to run this poll anyway.
I usually race my '79 every year at the Cruise-In, but I'm not going to be racing it because I didn't have the time to work on it this winter. I want to replace U-joints, oil seals, etc. before racing it again, so I was just planning on driving to the Cruise-In and going on the road tours, etc. I was talking to my Dad today about license plate registrations (personalized tags and renewals didn't come in mail, long story) and he mentioned that I could drive his 2000 convertible down to the Cruise-In if I want. Now, I wouldn't be racing it either, but I'm not sure that I really want to drive it down for a couple reasons. He made a comment about driving down in comfort.
1. Everybody wants to see more old vettes at the Cruise-In.
2. I'd be worried something would happen to the '00.
3. I enjoy the '79, even with it's oil leaks, rough ride and stock stereo.
Reasons to drive the '00
1. Better gas mileage
2. Convertible (but I can take tops off '79)
3. Still a fun car to drive and has good stereo with CD changer

There are at least a billion C5s out there. They are not making anymore C3s.

I really like my friends C5, great car for crusin the interstate and pulling DD duties. I guess it depends on how far the trip is. I LOVE my C3, but my C4 was 10x's more comfortable, multiply that tiems 2 and you'll have a C5.
Short trip, I'd take the C3 without a doubt. :yesnod:

I voted for the C3. I hope to make it up there for at least one day.

A shiny C5 vert is a pretty nice ride too. Why not drive the C5 while it is still relatively new to be able to remember those experiences too? Most C3's don't drive nearly as well today as they did when they were new. A shame more people don't know what it is like to drive a tight C3. My 79 (purchased new) was a great car! Not as refined nor potent as my Z06, but a very nice car that gave me wonderful memories. I took it on numerous cross country trips. i.e. Denver to Chicago, Denver to LA, Denver to San Francisco, etc.
Using the C5 a couple times for cruises doesn't mean that you have put your C3 out to pasture permanently. Just hurry up with the needed repairs so that you can take the 79 to the next cruise-in in tip top shape!

If you take the C5, make sure you turn off the traction control before doing burnouts in the parking lot!!! :D  :lolg:

I'm wrestling with the same issues. The C4 most likely won't be ready by the time the Cruise-In is here. The C3 uses a ton of gas (and premium at that). I'm considering taking my Caddy instead.
But still, last year, there was a see of C5's, then C4's, then a handful of us C3 drivers...It'd be nice to see more C3's. :yesnod:

I still think it was funny as hell.....But your right, not the greatest image to portray for a bunch of Vette owners.

:seeya Avery! I'm glad to hear you are going to be there again this year. Of course I voted for the C3. We need to make a show for ourselves among all the C5's. I'm thinking we should take over the lawn with C2's and C3's every night. Too bad you aren't going to race. I'm expecting some good numbers this year and it would be fun to line up again. Only this time I won't be sleeping at the light.
