What octane should I run in my '74?
We usually run Sunoco 94 or 93 in it. Because of the rising gas prices and since the carb was rebuilt it DRINKS gas, I was wondering If I could run a lower octane in it. It's an L-48 that is stock with advanced timing and the emissions equiptment removed.

The Corvette Black book says 91-octane leaded or low lead. When I was fooling around with old Honda Twins (which I still sometimes do) I ran across a study of old iron headed British bikes that said unleaded fuel was not a problem. Apparently, there was enough residual lead embedded in the seats to act as a cushion. This was true only if you aren't racing them. I also have a friend who has put lots of miles on vintage leaded gas cars and he has never experienced a problem with unleaded gas. Hope this helps.

Recommend using 90 and above. Your choice from 94 or 93! Take 93>less money you spend. 94>has same affect as 93 but more octane and money.

Your engine was built at the factory to run on regular, unleaded gasoline. Anything other than that is a complete waste of money.

I detuned my distibutor to run with 87 octane full time, and had no problems, but I'm running less than 9.5 compression. I used to put 92- 93 in it once in a while when I'd add marvels oil to the gas, though.

Higher octane actually retards burning ... thus reducing predetonation in
engines that run high compression, run hot, or have advanced timing.
For a low compression engine (L48), you might even be hindering the
performance slightly with a high octane gas.
Unless your engine pings, step down to a lower octane.
Don't let the gas companies fool you ... high octane is not necessarily high performance.
L48 tuned to factory specs should run all day long on 87 octane.
That's all I've ever fed mine.
