Default Can't get out of the hole power

I have 3.08 gears , wich isn't great, but i should still have enough power to get out of the hole and spin the tires. Unfortunatley I do not. the car has a 355 ported heads 650cfm carb msd ignition and so on and so forth... Do you think it is an advance issue? Maybe the carb needs to be tuned...It is not hesitating or choking it just doesn't seem to have the umff. :banghead: :cry

Try power braking to get your RPM's up before launching. This is easier if you've got a decent stall converter.

I believe a cam with lots of duration will cause power loss at lower RPM's
due to contamination of of the intake charge.

With a cam like that (say Dur@50 of .260 or more) you'll have to rev her above 3500 at least to make power.

Ported heads and a single plane intake will worsen it even more at lower RPM's

I'm not sure of those comments, but would love some feedback!! :chevy

What you are trying to do is hard for a Vette with a 3.08 rear and TH400 trans. Even after I rebuilt my motor with a low-mid range torque cam I had to power brake it at the right RPM's before it would break the tires loose. The rear end would squat rate down and then give out just a little chirp.
Check your timing and set it up untill you start to hear it ping and try it.

I have a 308 rear and TH400 and can break the tires loose easy. Its a 350 with a basic edlbrock carb and performer intake, factory style side exhaust. I thought my setup was kind of wimpy but now I don't feel so bad. Where the hell is Little Elm Texas. We are having a Stingray and Shark gathering tomorrow night if you are in driving distance to Austin.

If I had a dollar for ever time I heard this question :yesnod:

If your stall convertor is too low it may not help much if you had 3.36 gears. What stall convertor do you have? I put a 2000 stall in mine and it wasn't enough, finally went to a 2500 stall and it made all the differnece

Spinning the tires is cool and all, but sometimes I just have to wonder how great of a thing it is to not be able to. I mean everyone is always like, "yeah, it just roasts the tires." But then I think, "look at all the traction I have."

I had the same problem in my 81. I have a 383, check mods in my sig. I couldn't break tires off the line at all. Even if I just floored it, nothing, it would just go, slowly. I still have the stock 2.87's in the rear. I went and got my exhaust redone, had the guy switch it from the stock fake dual exhaust to a true dual exhaust with no cat. It made all the difference in the world. That factory exhaust was so restrictive. Immediately after pulling out of the exhaust shop, I goosed the car like I usually do, and the rear end broke loose and started fish tailing. My next mod will be to the air filter, as I have a 2" tall air filter, which is barely adequate. I can't fit anything bigger due to my carb spacer, but I'm going with a K&N filter and their X-Stream flow top. With that combo, I'll be flowing about 300 cfm more air to the carb.

When I first put the 383 in mine I was disappointed! Same issues until I did the transmission. I probably have 3:08 gears (not sure) too but when the Turbo 350 was rebuilt, I used a 2500 Stall convertor. No problem at ALL with hole shots now! :yesnod:

When I wanna show off, I can smoke them all the way thru first gear and chirp into second ... when I want to go fast off the line, I take off under the stall speed - like 1850 RPM or so and it goes like lightening! :blueangel:
