Can you put 1/2" studs on the rear axel still on the car?
I want to upgrade the rear to 1/2" studs.
Can this be done on the car?
if so how???
Seems like you'd need a press or something.

I replaced a broken stud in the rear. Hammered the old stud out. I had to cut the stud down a bit though so it would fit. Other then cutting the stud down, I dont think they can be put in without taking the axel off.

Yes if you don't have dust covers. I replaced all 10 of my rear studs with upgraded 1/2 x 3 inch morosso studs.
I placed the studs on the drivers side at 9 oclock, punched it out with a hammer, installed my jig to hold guide the drill bit, redrilled to 35/64th, installed the new stud and pulled it in with a few nuts welded together for more thead contact.
I did the passengers side at 3 oclock.
I have no dust shields and even 3 inch studs were easy to replace.
I just sent my jig to Twin Turbo.

Perhaps an unfair advantage, but at least he shares a lot of it.
Well, if the dust shield is the only thing in the way, can't a single hole be
drilled in it to accomodate longer studs ?

Thanks NHvette. I am willing to share any of my knowledge. Yes I have an unfair advantage in that I can make just about anything I can think of but like you said I am willing to share my ideas.

Cool!
I was hoping I wouldn't need to pull the hub!
Norval
Your fixture, I assume a piece of heat treated steel that clamps the the hub to keep the drill square???
Oh and I think that while Norval has an advantage it is fair...

No - but when you get your hands on a set of custom rear hubs, offset trailing arms, 6 link, and coil overs ...
I have all of the above. What does the bidding start at??? When I say custom hubs I took the stock hubs and bored them out for much larger bearings to accomodate my oversize custom axles.
This is a stock bearing compared to the new oversize ones that I used.

I remember back when, about 40-50 years ago, what I REALLY wanted to be was a machinest, making all sorts of cool things, lost touch with that when electronics became my hobby/living......so for me it's sort of a whimsical look back to see all that capability being put to good use.....
you do such nice work, shame we all can't get you to do more OF it....like for our cars??? :D :D :D
well now I know why tools are so expensive, Norval got them all.....jeez.....
Norval, question on that bearing size thing there, you made bigger spindles, but did that also include shortening the drive shafts?? or larger universal joints?? where did you get the larger diameter short stubby spindles from?? you make those too?? out of what??? cut down an old axel?? I didn't know it was possible to machine an old axel like that, thought the steel was too hard....how would you retemper something like that???
you make your own yokes for the diff, and if so, what is the diff?? stock or something else???

Re: Can you put 1/2" studs on the rear axel still on the car? (mrvette)
Gene when I twisted the stock axles I decided to make my own from scratch. I started with 1 3/4 diameter 4340 and turned out a compete axle but splined both ends for a removable axle flange too.
My son splined both ends for me. I made my own axle flanges and again my son splined internal splines for me. Same with the flange for the 1/2 shafts. I even make a custom nut. I then had everything heat treated to 47 RC. A good compromise between toughness and hardness.
For bearings I needed oversize to fit the large axles so I bored out the carriers for newer larger seats and larger seals. Bored both carriers only took an hour maximum and the larger bearings are about 87% larger then stock.
My rear wheel track width is 1 1/2 inches wider then stock or 3/4 inch per side.
I can also change axles flanges or the outer bearing by removeing the axle flange and sliding the bearing out. Both inner and outer bearings are slip fit.
Stock 1/2 shafts are used along with offset trailing arms
