One mile drag racing article in Car Craft
I posted on something like this yesterday and it was removed because the forum doesn't allow posts on street racing. I posted and then never got to see if anybody ever answered me. So if you did e-mail me or IM me.
The article was about a regular race set up at an shut down Air Force base that had a 12,000 foot runway 200 or so feet wide. The object wasn't so much as time like a normal 1/4 mile. But only top speed on radar at the end of the posted 1 mile. The fastest car at this even was some kind of 700+ hp C-5 vette with additional N2O it did something like 190 mph.

i'm also curious-- you can't post about street racing on this site?

It's called the Texas Mile. On an old Air Force landing strip. Quite legal. A member of our local club is going to run his $$$-modified C5 in it. And here's the website: http://www.texasmile.com/

I believe the 190mph car was a ZR-1  A C5 at the event blew a head gasket.

What I posted yesterday got axed because I started out the post talking about a modified ZO6 that has been bugging me about a top speed race challenge. Which I stated is stupidity. In a controled environment like our local open road races where it's legal and they have "Medivac copters" it's Okay, but still dangerous.
So I have told the Z06 that a one mile drag race would be the best idea. But after testing, I determined that's also an iffy situation also. Unless of coarse it's done in a controled environment like the texas runway event.
I was really wondering how fast did stock or slightly modded Z06's go in the Texas mile.

Be a REAL man: race the full mile, but make it 1st gear only. That sort of thing really separates the men from the boys. Yes, sir. It does. Oh, yes.
The loser should have to buy the winner beer for a year. If you win you can probably bankrupt the guy in a couple of months!

Dale - I don't know if you saw my post. It was an unscientific test of just pulling up to a stop on our nearly empty freeways at one of the mile marker posts. 8:30 in the morning, sunny day. Elevation 4400 feet, no wind, 80 degrees, T-Tops off, no power brake and just floored and short shifted. once I had it in fourth gear I hit the lockup button. Then it was just petal to the metal and watching for the next mile marker sign.
It was really windy without the tops on when I got to the measured mile!

"Windy" you say? Perhaps the AC was set on "high" and you didn't notice? :D
I actually went to see if I could find something on the net to give a hint what a Z06 would pull in that distance, but came up empty.
What are his mods?

I just told my six year old boy when someone makes a stupid dare you say "you first" followed by "you sure are dumb" after they've done it.

Heck, it sounds like a great idea !
Let's have a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, and 1-mile drag events !!!
To make it really interesting, we could have a 1/4 mile drag with a 1/2 mile slalom through some cones & then another 1/4 mile straight ! :jester

Your right! Hold my beer
Why I said that 1 mile racing was an iffy idea on even one of our open 20 mile straight level freeways is the speed that I was able to attain. My speedo only goes to 140 mph and I spent time caliberating it. Well when it's more than an inch past it and climbing. Your off in your hope that the Z-rated tires are good and all your steer bolts were tight! I glanced down at the tach and speedo as I hit the mile marker. With a site like http://www.smokemup.com and auto math. where you figure out tire dia. rear ratio and rpm it was the 160 mph area.
I have a highly modified car with aerodynamic considerations I have tested in Nevada State open road races where I was limited to 175 MPH for the 92 mile racing course drive. So I have a certian amount of faith in my car and my ability.
I do not drive any stock older Vette fast Late model c-3's and early C-4's are not made for it.
