Default Here is the problem I have been encountering

When my vette was still on the road, I had this problem.

Underload at part throttle it would lug and then backfire if you tried to accelerate. Low RPMs suck, no throttle response, and again at part throttle you cant accelerate under load, without luging and backfiring.

I rebuilt the carb, adjusted the floats, adjusted the idle screws.

I think that the combination of the long duration cam, and single plane doesnt jive with the low performance cylinderheads.

Might be too much carb. You mentioned adjusting the floats, so it must be a Holley? If not, here is Lar's paper on tuning a Quadrajet:
