Pump Gas Drags....maybe I just need a little N20???
There are some folks talking about the Hot Rod Magazine Pump Gas Drags. Sounds like it was a good deal overall. Weather threatened a lot though. Only two cars didn't make the qualifying cruise. Too bad one of them was the C-3! Apparently his race style MSD overheated and died. They did allow him to make an "exhibition pass" and he hit some 9.1's!! Too bad he wasn't able to actually race. There was a 632" Chevelle with lots of N20 that hit some low 9's and had the highest mph...157...but he kicked out a couple of rods on second pass. He won the award for the most out of control run!
Otherwise, it was interesting that many didn't run anywhere near claimed performance. Most were deep off into the 10's or higher. Man..I KNEW I should have exaggerated on my entry form!!!
The overall winner was that cool white 66/67 Chevelle that was in the mags a few months ago. It's got a nitroused 565 and a 5 speed G-Force!! My kind of guy!! Goes to show that a stick car CAN be as consistent as all those wimpy automatic cars!! He ran an average of 9.40's throughout the event! REAL cars have 3 pedals!!
Here's the top 10 cars:
10. 10.00 Brian Clarke driving a blue Nova
9. 9.99 Tom Hunsucker in a black Hemi 'Cuda
8. 9.95 Chris Johnson in a 1969 Camaro
7. 9.85 Mel Graham in a 1969 Camaro
6. 9.83 Jim Pravis in a black 1968 Hemi Charger
5. 9.76 Kevin Zasky in a black 1969 twin-turbo Hemi Charger
4. 9.70 Mike Thompson in a red S10 pickup with a 357 SBC
3. 9.58 Ray Doti in a red turbo Nova
2. 9.47 John Cunningham in a white Nova with a N/A BBC
1. 9.45 Ken Close in a 1934 Ford coupe with a BBC
I think this is a pretty neat deal. I'm really looking forward to seeing the features on these cars. I mean 3 Hemis are in the finals...they ought to get extra points for style!! And the Naturally Aspirated Nova is one bad little dude running 9.40's on motor alone!
Sounds like lots of guys have figured out how to run fast on pump gas. Maybe my N/A 9.99 goal is not unreachable! Gotta get back to work on it...AFTER I drive it to Bowling Green a couple of weeks for the Forum Cruise In!!

No it was open to anyone. They had 400 or so entries and It seems like only one of the ricers made the cut, like claimed high 9's. There were a few talking about it on the Hot Rod Magazine Forum, but they didn't stand up to all the talk I guess?
Turns out lots of folks had trouble laying down the numbers they claimed to be able to. Not ragging on anyone, apparently there were some weather issues etc that might not have made it optimal as well as humidity. Folks from back east have a hard time understanding what humidity, altitude and heat do to an ET slip.
Anyway, 50 cars were picked and that was the results. Lots of 10 sec. runs and a few killer 9 sec ones. I'm sure there are some 8 sec. cars out there, but that requirement to handle a traffic jam filled 30-50 mile cruise made many wimp out.
I think it just points out how hard it is to really lay down a 9 second pass in a streetable car. Just throwing nitrous or turbos at it doesn't guarantee anything. I've got lots of respect for anyone that pulls it off.
I'm looking forward to see the articles on the cars.

Re: Pump Gas Drags....maybe I just need a little N20??? (427Hotrod)
LOL, i dont think there are any super fast supras for 1/4. They are all dyno queens. Big turbos on a supra are only good for highway. Alot of guys with big turbos on their supras say they get beat by stock accords from light to light. Fastest run I have heard of by a supra was 11 flat or something.
