Gas is cheap, Car parts are expensive.
I spent about $10,000 on an engine/trans/diff upgrade.
at $2.00 a gallon and 10 miles per gallon, thats 50,000 miles.
if I were to spend $2000 on an overdrive transmission and got double the gas mileage ( 20 mpg ) I'd have to drive 10,000 miles to break even.
Hmmm, maybe the OD is worth it...

It was for me. Being able to hang with the C5's on the high speed cruises and seeing 300+ miles per tank is really nice.

It's like replacing an old crappy car with a new efficient one, after the price, registration, and taxes, it would take you forever to recover a few miles to the gallon.
We usually talk ourselves out of buying a new one on the idea of it's way cheaper to repair the big stuff on our 10 year old truck, for what would be a couple of monthly payments on a new one.

For the family/wife and peace of mind, not to mention missed work and spending every Saturday morning keeping "old Betsy" going for a few more miles, It is sometimes just better to take the loss and buy a new vehicle. When you start replacing original parts with replacement aftermarket parts it seems to be a neverending battle to keep up... Now that's not to say new vehicle are trouble free but today's cars are more reliable than ever before... Just expensive and frustrating to fix...
It really is a trade off of sorts.. It's too bad money is such an issue. Some of us just can't afford a new vehicle every 3-5 years. You're right it is expensive... I comes down to what you can afford and need.

2 front rotors
2 rear rotors
front pads
rear pads
this cost $565 Canadian and I still have to buy the parking brake shoes that will cost another $185
The cost for the rear rotors alone at the dealer would have been $368 each
I could do a complete brake job on my 77 pickup for around $200.

Vette X$$
Every time you get in and fire her up....worth a million bucks
After twenty years of maintenace and fixing your stupid mistakes, get in her and fire her up....still worth a million bucks
Sit in her, give her a shot of gas and let her pin you back in the seat while a
sweet roar fills your ears and head, which makes your brain pull these little strings on each side of your mouth towards your ears.....no bucks can beat that
