Default rear main seal leak?

Have one small leak that i can't locate the source of,a spot the size of a fifty cent piece or smaller on my garage floor. You can see the oil droplets collect on the bottom of the flywheel inspection plate.Would you concure that this is from the rear main and based on the size of the leak is it worth the effort to fix?
thanx wade

it could be from the top coming down the back, Clean everthing real good
then let it run till warm, then inspect. If nothing then drive short distance
at low speeds and inpect. if nothing take it to the highway (air moves things)
it made be a simple fix

These things don't normally get any better as time goes on. It doesn't sound like a bad leak now, but I can remember being stranded once due to a sudden major seal leak at the front end of the transmission on a Buick I once owned. The rear main is not real tough to replace on the C3's because it's a 2 piece seal. You will need to drop the steering linkage by removing the idler arm bracket bolts, then drop the pan and replace the seal. Certainly make sure it's not coming from above first. Someone once told me you can dust the suspected areas with flour and drive a short distance. The flour will stain quickly indicating a leak.

You can buy a leak detecter kit that uses dye and black light. easy to use and widely available. Clean engine, add dye to oil, drive, the source of the leak will be revealed under the black light.

:iagree: The UV die is the stuff. When you turn on the blacklight you can immediately see where the leak is--glows bright green.

Use the dye, it worked great for my 81. Turned out to be the rear main seal. it took me only a few hours to replace the seal and I also replaced the oil pump while I had the pan down. :seeya
