Anybody ever refurb a shifter console
I'm talking about the console / plate. Mine is in rough condition and new ones are pricey. I'm looking for suggestions on how to make this piece look better.
Would sandblasting and repainting help? Anyone know how the vendors do the refurbs?
Thanks for any help.

If your console paint is the metal one, I would recommend using some paint stripper to remove the paint. Then clean it real good with soap and water. Mask off the chrome edges. Wipe it down with some mineral spirits. Respray with some black.

:iagree:
If the chrome edges are in decent, unpitted shape you can make that console plate look like new! I used SEM's trim black after stripping the original paint off and scuffing the bare plate up a bit. The sheen is very close to original. Ditto on the razor blade trick. It gives a very sharp paint edge that I don't think would be possible with tape, plus it's easy.
The data plates and shift patterns are available as repros if you need to replace those. For my '68 I HAD to refurbish my shift plate as they aren't available as repros. The crossed flag emblems are, though.
Hey Ed T, mmmmm....roast shift plate!!! When's dinner??? :smiliedrool:

Did mine just like Ed, except I skipped the baking part.
For paint, either Semi-Flat or Satin black will work. I think Krylon has the semi-flat (don't even ask what "semi" flat means) and Rustoleum makes Satin. I used satin and it looks great. Just make sure you clean the stripper off thoroughly.

I repainted my 75 too looks great & replaced the two plastic pieces under the shifter (auto) After I painted it all I had to do is run my fingernail around the edges to get black paint off the chrome. I also put on a new ball & chrome button.

This is what I did. At least I have now time to restore the original. I have not decided if I'm going to keep the carbon fiber plate or go back to original... :smash:

Finn that looks awesome. Thats not the stock console surrounding you have for a '75 is it. Either way it looks awesome and I would love more details on how you did it.

What grit sandpaper did you use? I'm trying to just make mine look like new stock again... semi-gloss? or flat black?

I used paint stripper on mine to take all the paint off. Then scrub it with a toothbrush. Krylon semi black is pretty close to original.
