Upgrading an 85 mph speedometer on '80 Vette
I have a 1980 vette that came from the factory with an 85 mph speedometer. Is there a replacement speedometer with a higher mph available? Can a ’79 or ’81 speedo be used?

Yes. A 140 mph is easily available from instrument guys or Zip's or other 'Vette specialty catalogue companies. I have even seen a 160 mph unit. Seems they're in the hundred and a half range with trade-in.

140 mph Corvette Central :yesnod:
165 mph Ecklers
Not like our C3's would even be controllable at either speed but I had to have the 165mph

redline...it's the only place to go....about $65.00 plus freight for a 140 and they're great to deal with...I've had mine for 2 or 3 years now..

You can pay $150 plus for the 140/180mph replacement speedo guage OR you can save $100 and contact Redline in Memphis for a 140MPH guage for the very reasonable sum of $55 or so. He is well known with us forum members who were embarassed with the 85mph guage and needed a replacement.

I got mine from redline as well and love it.
And as far as stable at speeds exceeding the 85 MPH, my 1980 had the 140 MPH burried hard for at least 2 minutes (straight road(My speedo is reading fast due to wrong gears in the transmission, but it only reads about 20 high at that speed. We figure the speed was between 120-130 then)) and I never felt lift, wobble or any other funky movements. Just the normal slop in the steering and general lack of any real control that most old C3's have :D
