Casting numbers
Sorry for the Newbe question I have purchased about 6 books and thay have not arrived.
Is their any othe number I should be looking at other than the Block casting number on my 71 C3 #3963512?? I think, its hard to read with the rust, paint grease and poor lighting in my garage.
Will the Vin tell me the engine type?
Are their other clues as to correct engine????
Again Sorry I just can't wait for the book and manuals to arrive .
Thanks :steering:

Re: Casting numbers (checklst)
There is another set of numbers on a pad on the passenger side, in front. That will give you where it was made, when it was made and the application.
check out http://www.mortec.com , the casting number you have just tells you the engine size. heres what it says on mortec 3963512....454.......70-76...2 or 4 bolt.

The 512 block was used in 1969 to 1971 vettes, and the 289 casting from 72-74.
The engine suffix for 71 365 HP BB's are CPH(mt cars) and CPJ(at)
